Damascus steel

It's not me making it, I am getting one commissioned to celebrate my upcoming 3yrs of the stinky sticks - but I asked him if I could get some Damascus would he do a faceplate but looks like I can't get any thin enough

I don't have the tools or skills to make one I'm afraid, wish I did
I've got some steel suppliers for some guitar parts I make. I will have a fish around for you bud.

A half decent blacksmith should be able to point you in the right direction, if not make it theirselves? It's only layers of stuff, knowledge and skill, folded over again and again, and having the shite beaten out of it! Or something.
hmmm.
Yes, definitely 'or something'.

Put me on the list when you find a source!

The problem is true Damascus steel is folded hundreds of times so it is only available from about 3mm. You can get thinner sheet steel that is etched to look like Damascus but if it is true finished Damascus steel you want then the mod will have to be recessed 3mm to take it. Which is what I assume jm have done.

I have contacted a few uk specialists in Damascus steel and knife making asking the question so we will see

I am assuming you have done your research and found that the best Damascus steel available in the Northern Hemisphere comes from Damasteel in Sweden.

There's also Damascus steel that comes out of Asia, Pakistan in particular but it's a very poor quality and rusts easily.
John @ EVL uses Damasteel and I know of a knife maker who uses it a lot, Stuart Mitchell knives as I commissioned a set of knives from him a while ago
http://www.stuartmitchellknives.com/index.html. Stuart might be able to help with the plate you require.
Hope this helps
Regards
Colin.
ps The previous poster, scales on knives are the side plates that you hold ie typically the wooden bit hence plural

If your on Facebook, lookup double R mods, he is in the states but might be able to hook you up
