Hopefully someone can help.
I'm trying to drill an aluminium plate and the blooming drill bit keeps drifting.
It sounds stupid I know but is there a way to drill where you want to drill with some sort of precision as I keep messing up materials trying?

The best way would be to ose a pillar drill, and clamp the workpiece.
Other than that, centre punch first, then go through with a small pilot drill before making the full size hole. Aluminium doesn't like being drilled too quickly either ( I don't mean drill speed, just don't put too much pressure on the drill).

Thanks for the advice. I am using a pillar drill and trying to do a pilot hole. I haven't got a centre punch but I did bang a nail into the piece first and make a small hole. The drill bit just keeps wandering off on its own. A bit like me to be honest ;)

Stick a few layers of masking tape on the aluminium, that should stop the bit slipping.

Anyway of making a guide Seedy? Something to stop it moving like a metal rod running along the outside of the drill bit?

Duct tape, and a bit of lube ;)
Wait, that wad last night..
But seriously, duct tape on the ally, lube on the drill bit.

I just tried it and it's still slipping. Not when I start but when it goes in a bit. Very annoying.

Piece of wood? Drill the hole directly into that, tape it onto the box?

Anyway of punching a hole in the metal? Hot enough rod? Nail gun straight though the damn thing and neaten with the drill?
