Thanks for the advice. I am using a pillar drill and trying to do a pilot hole. I haven't got a centre punch but I did bang a nail into the piece first and make a small hole. The drill bit just keeps wandering off on its own. A bit like me to be honest
Sounds like the drill bit is blunt, unless you are using a really hard grade of Aluminium thenyou should be almost able to start the hole with the drill bit in your fingers.
Clearly I should have read the whole thread - but I suppose I was kinda sorta vaguely right, running in reverse means the cutting edges were'nt cutting so pretty much a blunt drill bit. Now all you need is to paint the the selector switch for forward and reverse in a nice eyecatching colour and label it "in" and "out"...
As long as my pain makes someone giggle, its worth fessing up to being a complete Numbskull sometimes. If you can't laugh at yourself, there's an issue ;-)
Now back to making my mod. Hopefully when I unveil the reverse drill mod, people will see that even idiots can be mod makers.

No offence meant mate, just made me giggle is all. Imo your a good mod maker, just shite with tools, well drills is all
I've only been drilling in reverse for 2 days! No wonder the wood was burning and my bits were wandering.

As someone that makes a living w/ power tool's, I have never ever done anything like that with a crew of other highly skilled carpenters standing there all trying to figure out what the problem was.
Sometimes you just gotta be OK w/ laughing at yourself
