Scientists say that if all smokers in the world switched from cigarettes to electronic cigarettes, it could save millions of lives.

In the UK there are currently about 100,000 deaths per year attributable to smoking, worldwide it is estimated to be more than five million.

Now researchers are hopeful that an increasing use of e-cigarettes could prevent some of these deaths.

But some groups warn that e-cigarettes could normalise smoking.

An estimated 700,000 users smoke e-cigarettes in the UK, according to Action on Smoking and Health. Some users combine "vaping", as it is often called, with traditional cigarettes while others substitute it for smoking completely.

E-cigarettes have also recently be found to be just as effective as nicotine patches in helping smokers quit.

The "normalising" argument really annoys me. "Okay, so they won't be dead or dying, but the important question is, will they still realise they're filthy lepers, as they jolly well should?"

Funny patches done nowt for me, ended up smoking and wearing a patch

Same here, Grizzly. That's actually how I ended up here - bought a cig-a-like in the hopes of preventing that from happening in my last go-around with patches. Ended up ditching the patches and keeping the gadget.

I found that patches only worked if i used them to cover my eyes, then i couldn't find my fags!

I see they are now advertising a patch/strip that dissolves in the mouth containing nicotine, would have thought this is more dangerous but because its the same company that does sprays and patches it's a viable alternative seemingly. Are we that gullible?

The dissolvable strips are not new, they used to be used as breath fresheners and stop snoring aids.
To be fair its not a bad idea, i just think it will cost quite a bit for a standard pack of nic strips.

Arghhh, that "normalising smoking" argument makes my fists itch, what they really mean is we don't like it so nobody else can like it either...

Indeed. I mean, smoking is already "normalised", how often do you see someone mention they're nipping out for a puff and their companion gasp, faint, and cry out "I DENOUNCE YOU, DEVIANT!" or such like? It's like claiming it normalises wearing shoes.

It seems that demonizing smokers, and opening them up to vilification, was not enough. Now it is being aimed at nicotine addicts.
So the nasal spray is ok because it shows you are trying to give up? Ditto aerosol. But how dare you not want to get off nicotine, and go and find yourself an alternative that you actually enjoy!
If every smoker switched to vaping, the holier-than-thou mob would still need someone to persecute.

I believe some pub chains have banned it. Well I wouldn't go there to stand outside and vape. I would hope my mates wouldn't expect me to either.
Money talks, and I'm sure a boycot would change their attitude.
