Elliptical coils anyone???

I tried to make a coil like this a little while ago, but more of a raindrop (?!) shape.

I tried it because I thought the airflow from beneath the coil would be more effective. Was thinking along the lines of air over a plane wing.

Well I taped two different diameter rods together, got to winding.....eagerly wapped it into the RDA......then it collapsed while giving it a squeeze :17:

I've seen it done on a YouTube video of recoiling kanger heads. He used two drill bits as the former. It needs heating well to hold its shape if it springs at all as you take it off the former it goes bonkers.

What if thicker wire was used? that's not supposed to be as springy is it? I've got 28 gauge and I wouldn't want to test it without a blowtorch handy

I have built a few of these "oval" coils using 2x 1.5mm drill bits with a small bit of wire to keep drill bits apart, the wire is removed once coil is in place, the reason for the wire is that the coil is difficult to remove off the drills so the wire gives a bit of play so the drills can be removed. i have also tried using a tie wrap as my former but could not remove the coil from it.
As for how they perform, I will say I noticed no difference to the normal "round" 7 wrap coils I make for my pt3. the only difference is the oval ones take twice as long to make and where prone to flooding/gurgling, there is a video on youtube, by a brilliant old american guy, worth watching just to watch him work.
