Basically, by 2017, the EU Commission wants to stick tax and excise duties on 'novel tobacco items, which use steam instead of smoke to put nicotine into people's lungs'

Even more ridiculously, they believe taxing e-cigarettes could help meet 'public health objectives'.

They will use the 'single-market' rules to force the measure through.

You seem surprised. :) No big shock really, when you concider the UK government already taxes sex ! Yes, they do. You pay tax on condoms. :)

I'm not surprised - apart from them pushing the idea that it is being undertaken for public health reasons!

not suprised...but still...wankers

im still trying to invent one that runs on tomatoes

No surprise. It will happen regardless of the consultation and whatever lobbying is done - because that's how the EU Parliament works. Look as though you are being democratic and then do exactly what you want in private. Democracy has no place in any of it.

If the bill falls at the first hurdle the narcissistic bafoon that is overseeing the introduction of the bill and subsequent vote will make sure it gets passed another way. When I use the term "narcissistic bafoon" I am, of course, referring to that abomination of oxygen thieving human tissue, Linda McAvan. Other MEP's are available.

simples really,

1. Vaping displaces Smoking tax

2. they need to recoup said tax as it props up far more than smoking related NHS costs

3. We get the obligatory fisting

This. Exactly this.

The only way not to get taxed by the European shysters? Vote to leave on 23/6. Although I'm not hopeful. We Brits love a good whinge but for the most part lack the conviction to do anything about it. You only have to look at the 100Thousand petition, 2.8 ish million Vapers in the UK and the petition got around 10k signatures? Ffs.

However I think it's probably narrow minded to think that even if the country gets off its bums to vote this leave the eu through that any consequent UK government won't tax them. They will - they tax everything.

Look at those packs of cancer sticks that we all used to love. Nearly a tenner. Over 8 quid of it tax.
£17 per 10ml juice anyone?

If juice is taxed on an equivalent scale to a pack of 20, then it would put so many people off ever trying vaping. I love the money saving myself and would be mightily pissed off it became as expensive as smoking.

Exactly. Me too. But unless there's a collective voice to be heard then that's exactly what will happen.

The justification for taxing tobacco is that smoking is inherently bad for your health and costs the taxpayer in NHS bills. A so called 'sin tax'.
There can be no similar justification to tax ecigs or tax them to the same degree. It would in my view be more difficult for the UK govt (unshackled from the EU) to slap on a heavy tax given the Public Health England findings.
