What's new

First SS coil

its not oxidised properly or your wick is not wet enough mate. one of the 2

im guessing i didnt oxidise well enough then as i think thats what was giving me the grim taste i was getting, ill try again afresh once i get the delivery of mesh and kanthal through

This morning I changed out the mesh wick for a silica wick, just to experiment, I am pleased with the silica wick as I seem to be getting better results, maybe I just need more practice with the mesh wick.

What i like to do is first roll up a SS wick(s) so it's loose enough to slide in and out of the wickhole easily. After torch it to oxidise. Cut it to size. Put it to the side.
Then cut an appropriate piece of wire and then wrap it around a 2mm screwdriver (or drill bit).
Experience tells you how many wraps you need.
Then, with the coil still on the screwdriver, poke it into the wickhole.
Slide the coil down into place and attach it to the screws while leaving the screwdriver still in the hole.
Pull out the srewdriver and check if the coil is lined up with the wickhole.
if not, slide the driver back into the coil and its tip just into the wickhole and gently force the coil into position. Repeat until good.
Test resistance and if good, pulse your mod a few times to see if they glow evenly.
Now, if you've done all of the above, your SS wick should easily slide into your coil(s) and down the hole.
Pull it back out and grab a cottonball.
Gently pull out a little bit of fluff from the cottonball and rub the top bit of your SS wicks so that it starts catching the cotton fluff and roll it onto the top of the wick. Repeat until the whole bit that pokes up from the atty deck is covered with cotton - down to the wickhole.
The cotton should be a light covering but not too thick - just so it covers the black wick beneath and uniform.
Now, gently lower the cotton covered wick into the coil and into its hole.
Gently screw the cotton-covered end into your coil - in the direction of your coil's build. The cotton should make it down all the way to the wickhole.
Fill your tank and wet the cotton with juice (don't dry burn).
Make sure the wick(s) is wicking and give it a try!

I find that cotton or muslin strings (cheesecloth) are really great with gennies - no hotspots/legs/shorts/burnt taste - nothing but flavour.
Be careful not to let your tank empty too much that wicking issues begin - your cotton might not get enough juice and will burn.
Build should last a good while, but if you do accidentally burn the cotton, just unscrew your wicks from the coils, blow torch them to burn off the cotton and juice and re-cotton. Your coils should last many wicks.

I just followed your method Dennis and its the closest I have got to success , I have had about 10 coils pop on me today, and must have used 6 squares of 500 Mesh ,it is doing my head in , I vought 2 attys and I wish I hadn't ! With Dennis's method I have got the coils lighting up evenly etc but now I am getting the vilest of burnt taste, I just don't know what I am doing wrong? Anyone able to advise me before I throw the attys away and go back to my kayfun(clone)

That has to be a short via the ss mesh. Despite we oxidising them, they tend to have burrs that still make contact with the wick hole. That's the main reason I started using the cotton /Muslin method. This further isolates the coils from the SS.
There's a great vid from RIP Trippers on YouTube showing you how to do this but I'm writing this on tapatalk, at work at the moment, so I can't include the link. Pay attention to how he rolls the cotton onto the wick. Good luck.

Okay that must be right because with the mesh out the coils light up as one, then as soon as I poke the mesh back in only 2 or the four coils light up, I am beginning to think it's not worth the hassle! I fiddle about with the wires with the mesh on and just can't get them all to light up, and the taste is horrendous ,so annoying..

Just saw your edit, thanks man ,I will hunt that video down now.

It sounds like the cotton is burning. By making the SS mesh into a tube and ensuring that it is quite a loose fit all should be fine in the genesis world without the need for cotton to go into any wick hole.

Sent from somewhere just south on our nations capital.

Well that's both of my atty's coiled up all coils lighting evenly, both have mesh in the wick hole, both tightly rolled, both are nice loose fits and both taste like a F**king bonfire, what complete waste of a day...they're both going in the bin, lifes too short, I just can't see what I am doing wrong I have followed RIP Trippers video to the end I have copied exactly what he did, but yet they taste like bonfires ,I just do not get it.Have I got the wrong mesh? I have 316 Marine Grade #500 from stealth vape http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201060166430?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 I hate giving up on things but I have wasted a day off work messing with this , it's mad.
