I've not really dabbled with custard until now (always late to a party) and my first batch is was grants vanilla custard using capella - CAP Vanilla Custard and CAP French Vanilla.

It's steeped for 6 weeks but all I taste really is a caramel taste exactly like caramelised sugar on a Creme Brule.

Is it just me that gets this taste?

I've read there are more custardy concentrates to use than capella.

Any suggestions for a tweaked recipe using the capella as I've got quite a few mls left?

thanks
MM

Hi MM,
Not sure why you are referencing Grant's?
You need to provide more info about the mix:all flavours, percentages, PG, VG & Nic used.
Are you following a particular recipe?
As a guess, taking from the info provided, you have over powered with vanilla, giving the mix a harsh taste.
Logically speaking, Capella spent time developing a balanced vanilla custard flavour and you have just added extra vanilla to it.
Have you tried mixing Cap VC at 15% as a stand alone, did it need more vanilla?

You haven't described what the end result you wish to achieve?
If you are trying to create a clone of GVC there are many simple clone recipes on the web (my base is a variation of),
or are you after a basic custard?

I create a batch of VC every month which I use as a ADV and as a base for many other recipes. The problem is a good custard needs min 4+ weeks to steep and then gets even better as time goes on.
I am always shy to recommend recipes and juices as every ones tastes are different. But I also know how disheartening it is to start from scratch again and then wait for 6 weeks to steep the juices before tasting.
If you PM me your address I will send you a sample of my base mix, with the exact recipe, this will be a good starting point, you can then fine tune to your preference of taste. Also saving you a lot of time and you will know what the next batch will taste like with no nasty surprises.

Thanks for the detailed reply matey much appreciated.

I knocked up : v3 I believe:
CAP VANILLA CUSTARD 15%
CAP FRENCH VANILLA 5%
20 drops super sweet (into 100ml)

I had / have no preconceptions on what I was trying to achieve other than pick a random custard recipe and and suck it and see.

It's was kinda good I vaped my way through 100ml quite happily although it wasn't really custardy so much as caramely [emoji2]

That's very generous of you offer to send me a sample and as its company policy never to decline cash or free stuff I will graciously accept your kind offer I will pm you later [emoji3][emoji106]

What's your thoughts on the recipe I tried?

Thanks
MM

This is not a recipe I would make, simply because to me it would be too much vanilla, which could mute the custard. I would rather mix 20% Cap VC if you needed a stronger mix and then sweeten to taste, as it would be a more balanced flavour.
Most all Vanilla Custard recipes use Cap VC v1/2 as the base and then add two or more other concentrates to give depth and thicken the flavour.
I would personally drop the percentage of VC to around 10% then add others to enhance.
A few for example:
Vanilla Swirl
NY Cheesecake
French Vanilla /Creme/Deluxe
Cheesecake Graham Crust
Dulce De Leche
Malted Milk
Cream- Vienna, Bavarian, Fresh, Sweet
Brown Sugar

It all takes time and experimentation, unfortunately. There is a fine line between a Vanilla Custard and a Vanilla Custardy Dessert, it all comes down to your personal taste.
Your sweetener seem fine at <1%, but i do find that any sweetener darkens the coil and wick quickly, whether this is a form of caramelisation, not sure. Increasing the watts also brings out more sweetness for me,so may support the above, which maybe where you're getting the after taste from.
Again the offer still stands PM me.
