I was weak and glamorous green cigarette packets got me hooked on smoking

All except the florin and farthing for me. My pocket money once went up from thruppence to a tanner and I thought I was loaded. When grandad visited and me and my sis got half a crown we felt rich!

went along way 4 black jacks for 1 penny etc and at 12 pennies to a shilling thats a lot of black jacks :)

I used to buy Rothmans Royales because of the impressive gold band on the filter.

Dead flash, me.

No. Glamorous green packages got you hooked on that brand Anna. There are a lot of complicated reasons why people take up smoking and it's not down to the packaging.

She said: ‘There is no simple solution to the difficulty and the problem that we have in persuading that remaining 20 per cent of the population to give up smoking and of course to persuade our youngsters not to smoke.’

Yes there is. Stop putting roadblocks in the way of products like e-cigs and snus and let the market do what it does best. (hint: go read the smoking figures for Sweden)

If you want to act in the interests of public health then look at the science on things like snus and e-cigs. Nicotine is a legal and almost harmless drug when used correctly. Vilifying smokers doesn't work, putting all kinds of stupid regulation in the way won't stop people smoking either (see other illicit drugs). Allow other forms of nicotine onto a free market, put some basic regulations in place to cover product safety and quality and watch in amazement as smokers switch to much less harmful alternatives. (Bigger hint: no seriously, go look at Swedens smoking figures again - repeat until sinks in)
