Kanthal twisted wire coils

The crystal structure of aluminium oxide is compatible with the base material. Aluminium oxidises almost instantaneously on contact with air anyway so even if the coat flaked off, it would reform immediately. If you do successfully remove it (dissolve it in mercury) you will rapidly find out how viciously chemically reactive aluminium can be.

There can't be very extensive oxide formation on the wire surface anyway or it wouldn't conduct electricity.

I used to be a scientist.

Point taken about 'practicalities'.
I'm no scientist just a very old engineer. if the wire was just solid alloy as you think, without any insulation, when you push the coils together the path of least resistance is not through the coil but but across it, basically a dead short. So therefore the outside of the wire has to have some sort of insulating properties. I wasn't being technical just curious. Anyway I phoned Kanthal and got my curiosity satisfied.
I'm after designing a mod as I got too much time on my hands and there seem to be a few problems such as dry hits, flooding and the +ve battery contact burying themselves in the rubber insulator etc. I've read a lot about, not to mention the inherent weakness of the 510 thread. Compare this to the Mister (MISTer -hybrid (Silver plated contacts) | VJ-Mods) where the thread on the atty base is M20x1 and screws directly into the tube seems as good as it gets for strength.
After that there's an idea I had put into my head about the atty being variable temperature control and porous ceramic tube wicks, but there's along way to go with that. But I'm sure it's doable in the future along with fluid supply controlled by the vacuum from inhaling.
For now I think I'll just stick to the body design and leave the rest to the eggheads.
Thanks for you reply though.

So the kanthal wire is cored then ? I never noticed. I didn't come across the stuff until i took up vaping.
That 510 thread weakness, in what way do you find it weak ? Do you just mean in general, by default/design ? I have no trouble with my 510 connectors using good quality mods but with some cheaper devices & more mass produced devices i see a blatant weakness, mostly in materials.
To my mind the hybrid trend makes total sense in that dept' & yeah, removes that weak point. I think it's like betamax & vhs though.
If atty manufacturers use good grade materials & make the 510 column long enough & add plenty of threads, extend the same attention to the mod's 510 connector too & there's no hassle. I just got a new mod today & one of the notable features is the solidity of the 510 female.
If you don't mind, what exactly is our kanthal wire ?

Wot B1mble said aluminium oxidises readily in air forming an insulating layer
Otherwise a microcoil would effectively be a dead short

If you want to talk nuclear power then listen here, my friend and i-upon getting my new Igo L-decided to build me some coils with my 28gauge kanthal (which apparently has a core haha I didn't know that) so we twisted it tight with a power drill then made 4 wrap micro coils (my friend claims it as micro-macro which I don't understand) We made 2 in hopes of dual coiling it which didn't work. So after making both we tested one. That little devil-and I do mean DEVIL-lit up like a lightbulb and then my kanthal MELTED!!!! keep in mind the heat ceiling on kanthal is 1400°F... IT FREAKING MELTED!!!!!!! XD

So now I'm using the other one in my RDA ^-^ tastes SOO good. As long as I remember its "pulse fire only".

I thought people just dreamt up new coil designs, chucked different voltages at them and rated them on vapor and taste

They do. I'm a consumer & user of vape gear & i don't play with fire. Standard micro coils & that's it. In fact if you asked someone who takes it further, mine are probably nano coils ! Yeah, whatever, it's wire wrapped round a 1.5mm pin. Micro, macro, nano, piano.

all about making best use of power
surface area of coil v current flow
ribbon works for me, less faff.
