in the stab wood mod post I did last week @griffo1981 ask if I could slice off 2mm off the wood for some side panels for his lmc

well, easy you would think.....

let's go through the process.

watching battleship on the DVD which didn't help....

so you think cut off 2 pieces of stab wood about 2mm thick

ok here is my new blade

it is or razor sharp the gap between the saw and the insert where the blade fits is 3mm each side of the blade, the saw spins at about 10,000 rpm on full speed it is not braked, so you see the problem how are you going to cut that slim bit off without it flying into you or the guts of the saw? the saw cuts oak like it's not even there it's that sharp!!!

I did it, am I going to tell you, nope the size is 90 x 60 :jawdrop:

hmm that's an 8mm thin spanner so some sanding needed

IMG_3087.jpg

more sanding but how are you going to sand them flat being only 2mm thick-ish

IMG_3086.jpg

I've glued some holding blocks on so now to sand 800, 1000, 1200 1500 2000 grit paper

this is 1500 grit as they become flat the wood looks almost 3d a couple of faults in the wood but I cant help that.

getting thinner

They look great
Was going to mention hybrid when I saw the bit about faults in the wood until I reached the end

Never really thought of this until now though but just how strong is stab wood?

It depends what you do to it and how you cut it the finished product is as hard as the original wood plus some more but it's the wood itself I wouldn't use beech or oak for mod blocks as it's boring brown or pale coloured

I use hardwood from the roots from the faults I use alder cheery laburnum birch etc all the wood you would burn all spalted all unique

But is the process that's the key the water content the stabilising all play a part to the finished product

So when you planning on making some billet box panels [emoji6]

Could send you my panels for a template if something your interested in?

Nice work @vapesmarter, I love watching your projects take shape. Don't worry, only 7 days to go now, and people will need stands, cabinets and boxes to store and display all their tpd shite ... :D
