Mixology is something I'm very interested in experiementing with. I think it's something I could get some decent results from. I would probably start with getting the base ingredients from here...

Everything Liquid | Your one-stop-shop for Liquid Bottles, E-Liquids, E-Liquid Label design & printing and E-Liquid Mixers

Whilst on there I noticed they do flavours from TFA so I started researching. A lot of the flavours on the TFA site have caveats which lead to pages like this...
Perfumer's Apprentice
and this Is Butter Healthy? Part One: Butyric Acid Benefits - The Nourished Life

Now I'm aware that obviously these harmful elements are in cigarette smoke and vaping is exponentially better for you anyway but I'd like to try and bypass any avoidable risks.

This is probably old news for you guys so what's the official word on flavourings?

That's part 1 of this post ;)

I'm planning on creating mixed flavour vials then adding a few drops to a base of PG, VG and nic. Sound like a good plan? Also how much (roughly) does 30ml of 18mg base typically cost?

Looking forward to some input on the subject ;)

I don't have the attention span to reply to everything, so I'll just answer some of it.

Per 10mls of overall liquid, you probably want 2mls of flavouring. So if you premixed the flavours you want, you could add 2mls for every 10mls you mix.

Some say buttery shit is bad, some say the dose is so low it doesn't matter.

In my experience, it's best to just buy the VG and nic seperately. Doesn't make it much harder.

Sorry if I was useless.

I'd not buy 18 mg base as by the time you've added flavour, VG, PG etc it will have diluted the 18 mg base to a lower level of nicotine. I'd try at least a 52 mg base and any of the juice calculators, either online or an app like POTV's own.

It's not entirely a mistake to do a one-stop shop for your first dabbles, it's just you can buy nic cheaper if you look around a little bit. VG and PG is cheapest off Classikool on amazon or ebay.

There's no short answer on which flavour concentrates to buy and which to avoid. You're not in a bad place to buy from vaper suppliers, but there's no substitute for your own research and applying your own attitudes to risk.

For your plan, it sounds like you want to make up unflavoured bases (ie VG/PG and nic) then add flavourings for test samples. It's a sound approach, helps you to reduce waste and makes the process of sample creation rather easy. I do much the same ... I have bottles of 50/50 18mg, 70/30 10mg, 60/40 18mg for example. Then I just make up 5mls calculating the concentrate %. If you just want to get your flavouring % in the right ballpark you can save more money by not adding nic until your ready to make up 10mls or more.

There's no right way and wrong way really, but you do need to do your research to get the most out of it.

Thanks, no I would buy 72 nic but mix up a base of 18mg nic 65/35 pg/vg. Since the flavouring will be pg based that'll probably drop me down to 17mg overall nic and a 70/30 (ish) mix, I'll do the maths closer to the time and check out the calculators to get things in the right ballpark.

What is a general cost for a plain 18mg 70/30 mix for 30ml?

For me personally, works out about 60p per 30ml not including a bottle or flavouring.

*EDIT*

If i use 6ml of concentrate in there that's about an extra £1.50 if i buy 10ml concentrates, or 72p if i use 100ml concentrates

that's £1.32 + 10p for a 30ml bottle

£1.42 for a nice home made custard

*EDIT*

Actually a tad cheaper, i use about 16% flavour in my custard, not 20%, can't be arsed to do the maths again :D

You got it ;)

I'll be getting minimal quantities to start (250 nic and the smallest PG/VG they do) so one stop is the most convenient for now.

I would make 250ml of 'base' then experiment with different flavour mixes.

I think the key to getting it right and reproducibility is documentation and careful measurements (particularly in the small quantities I'll be doing) so I'll have to get better at writing things down and fast! :)

Potentially the risks are tiny, especially compared to smoking, if a vanilla note is 10% of your flavour and your flavour is 10% of your juice then that's not a massive amount. It's a conundrum though for sure.

Don't pre-mix the nic and base as most calculators enable you to input the nic base strength and the carrier that it's in and work out the rest for you. It's not a biggie but in the past i've made life more difficult for myself when i thought that i was making it easier.

From my costs, 30mls of 70PG/30VG 18mg/ml base would be 94p ... I'd say BD1 buys his nic in larger quantities and from a cheaper supplier than I do.
