I might be the only one but I found the air flow really turbulent without a pin in the top. I have a 1mm at the bottom and a 2.5mm in the top. Never changed is as its been perfect for me.

I use the 45° technique and find it's just fine. It was my first rta so it took me a bit of time to figure out how much cotton. But I'd not be without it now.
