Hi there,

So I started vaping last week. Was a ten a day Malborough light smoker, now it appears 4/5.
I originally bought the pockex aspire but found it a bit too harsh and I wanted something more similar to a cigarette. Even pulling 3mg from that made me a bit wired and I felt I was taking in too much nicotine.

Then I went on to the joyetech ego aio eco. Like it alot more, its more similar to a cigarette. I started on 3mg as well as having my four cigs a day, upped it to 6mg but felt wired again on it and a bit sick, downed it to 4.5mg but tbh I've been craving a cig all evening, extremely cranky, but want to wait till before I go to bed. Basically I can't seem to find a happy medium between cigs and vaping. I'd like to get off the analogs in the next couple of months though and vape full time.

Any advice for a starter would be greatly appreciated!

Hi @Louis91 and welcome to the planet.

there is a lot to learn out there and youve joined the right place to get all you need.

3mg is more for a long time vapour and im still on 3mg after 3.5 years of vaping.
the reason you feel a bit weard or sick is the nicotine but its also the kit your using.
with those youve tried i guess they are all direct to lung which uses low ohm coils.
the lower the ohm the higher the wattage the more cloud so more nicotine intake into your lungs so it will make some people get dizzy. this is called nic od but not in a bad way.
it can get very confusing as weve had reports that some shops just want to make sales and will sell a high powered kit to a beginner just beccause they want to make big cloudz so they get sold a sub ohm kit which for most wont help them kick the habit as they need low nicotine which isnt enough to detox off the cigs.

for someone just starting vaping i always recommend 12mg or 18mg nic but in a mouth to lung tank. these tanks use higher ohm coil so need much lower wattage so even though higher strength you dont get too much so it makes you feel sick.

just for example
low ohm coils are best with 3mg or 6mg and use coils with numbers llike 0.2, 0.25, 0.5 or similar and can take 50-100watts and use much more juice.
i use 0.25, and 0.5 in various tanks at 50-65watts and get through 25-35ml of juice a day.

high ohm coil are best with 9mg - 18mg and use coils with numbers like 1.8, 1.6, 1.5 or similar and usually run at 10-14watts max and 2-5ml can last you all day.

hope that explains a bit but the most important thing is no matter how silly you might think your question might be its normally not so dontbe affraid to ask as weve most prob heard it before.

keep going and try not to fall back on the cigs. the outlay to get you started might cost a fair packet but if it gets you off the cigs you will be healthier and start saving mucho wonga after a while.

Wow thanks so much for the info. Didn't realise that. Hmmm what starter kit would you recommend as you seem to know a bit about this?
The joyetech came with a 1.2ohm coil

Oh sorry, not the joytech... The aspire pockex. Would that make it a bit more mouth to lung?

The joyetech aio is a mtl, I have one that I use quite alot. It could be down to the juice? Are you using nic salts? If so, Ive not used nic salts myself but what ive read is that they give you a quicker hit, more like you get from smoking so could cause a nic rush. Are you chain vaping? That could also cause you to feel sick
P.S welcome @Louis91

Hi Kriskent. Thanks for the reply! Yeah I thought the joytech eco was advertised as a mouth to lung alright but it has a .5 coil which confuses me a bit as I thought that is a sub ohm coil?

I've heard the innokin t18 is good for smokers trying to quit too?tbh I wouldn't mind something with a bit of a tighter draw? I'm using halo's prime 15 or else Vudor top t. No Nic salts as of yet! But I'll try whatever will get me off the smokes!

Also id pick it up once every two hours maybe when I crave a cigarette and take about 7 puffs? I'm substituting 4 of my cigs a day this way. So would only have about 28- 30 puffs a day? Not a fan of the dizziness tho tbh and i think I'll have to up the e-juice soon too to keep me off them.

the joyetech is indeed MTL, it's a 0.5 ohm coil but that doesn't mean anything in the overall picture .... I'd recommend at least 12mg in it usually.

Not sure what to advice though as you are still smoking as well?

Louis, I can only speak from personal experience. I’m nearly two months without a cigarette due to switching to vaping and I’d say the following:

1. For me it was cigarettes or vaping and not using the latter to wean myself of the former. The first 3 days were tough but definitely not as bad as I had found with other attempts to give up.
2. The advice from @MrDJ is spot on in my own experience. I use a MTL (aspire zelos) rather than a DTL kit, 12mg nic and I think this definitely a good place for ex smokers to start. My wife got the aspire pockex and uses 6mg nic as she was a lighter smoker. I would recommend either as both replicate smoking more closely and both give you the nic hit a ciggy once did.

A number of people have told me that trying to keep smoking whilst vaping was problematic for them in giving up and I decided to go all in with vaping.

Good luck, and welcome from another noob. Giving up the stinks has been amazing for me, I feel better and am saving a fortune. Let us know how you get on and do ask advice here as the posters are really knowledgeable and friendly

Welcome to the forum.

First port of call is to get rid of any cigarettes. Once you've made the decision to quit, don't keep fags around. If you crave, vape. The sooner you stop smoking the easier it will be. It's not just the nicotine your body becomes accustomed to but all the other thousands of chemicals. Every time you smoke a cigarette you start the process all over again.

Best of luck.
