I have a question/concern though; a friend if mine recently ended up in hospital with a suspected heart attack. It was discovered that it was a huge overload of nicotine from the e-cigs he had been using. Apparently a doctor told him he had smoked the equivalent of 120 fags in one day?? Is that possible? Can you vape too much? Does it depend greatly on the liquid used? I don't think that would happen to me but I am a bit concerned after his experience. :/ Has anyone else had any bad side effects from vaping?
Welcome to the Planet.
Yes you can vape too much. there are a bunch of symptoms to nicotine overdose and you *really* have to go some to vape yourself to that kind of position.
If you are an adult and have a nicotine tolerance already(are a smoker or ex smoker) then unless you use e-liquid for eyedrops, drink it or spill lots of it on your skin and don't wash it off, then the chances of winding up getting rushed to hospital are very close to nil.
E-Liquid is poisonous, very poisonous, if you drink 10ml you'd be really ill. 2ml of 18mg liquid is estimated to be a fatal dose for a young child. It's also not great if you spill it on your skin and don't wash it off. Used as intended though in an e-cig getting enough nicotine into your system to do you serious harm is nearly impossible. You get nauseous, light headed, dizzy, headaches long before you get to the point where nicotine overdose becomes dangerous.
There are caveats though. Vaping is a new thing and there are people out there who mix up really poor quality stuff, in less than ideal conditions. It's entirely possible that this person got a bad batch of e-liquid from a dodgy car boot, or the man he saw about a dog at his local. Decent e-liquid costs around £3 a bottle (10ml) (which will last an occasional user about a week) It comes in bottles with child resistant caps and has a printed label will have the TOXIC symbol on the label, the address or contact details of the people that made it and several sentences like 'Toxic in contact with skin' along with a raised warning triangle somewhere on the bottle. Which is known as CHIP packaging, and is a basic legal requirement. There are people on Facebook, and ebay (selling ecig stuff is banned by ebay) and carboots and other places selling e-liquid that doesn't comply with this and some of it might well be poorly mixed/dangerous.
You can get side effects from vaping. Dry throat is probably the most common. If you're allergic to PG or VG (the two main components in e-liquid) you can use liquid that is 100% PG or 100% VG depending on what you need. Outside of allergic reactions there aren't any reported bad side effects known. the juries still out on the long term effects (they'll be back in about 15 years to report) but all the science so far says vaping is 99% safer than smoking, and approximately as dangerous as drinking coffee.
If you have any concerns about vaping and your health then the absolute best thing to do is go talk to your doctor.
