What's new

Probably been asked before, but... ohm reader really necessary?

I'm sure dozens have asked this in the past but I really just can't be bothered to search for it haha.
I have a few rebuildables, namely 2 rdtas and an rda, and I've been using them for a few months and I'm quite comfortable with them and love using them.
I always use a little ohm reader, the kind you put 2 AA batteries in. I'm wondering really if this is totally necessary when using regulated devices, since they read the ohms just fine and have all the built in fail safes like short protection and things. Obviously if using a mech mod an ohms reader would be necessary to check if it's safe to use, but on a regulated mod, is it necessary?
To me it seems easier to just build the thing on the mod switched off, and then switch it on when I'm done to see the ohms and fire it etc. instead of getting AA batteries and screwing it on the ohm meter.
Is this a bad idea?

They will probably give u a better reading of your ohms. I always use mine even when using a regulated but the regulated shoule give u a near accurate reading. Always good to be more safe than sorry and would most definetly use one before putting a build on an unregulated device

Well if the mod reads the resistance differently to the ohms meter, that would make the ohms meter obsolete anyway surely because the mod will fire at what it reads the resistance as? So the value from the ohms meter would then be useless?

This is talking about a fancy shmancy ohms reader compared to a basic one... I'm asking if any ohms meter is necessary at all, or whether I'm fine just using my mod as an ohms meter. When I turn the mod on the resistance is displayed before firing, or atomiser short or anything that might impede safety. So since my mod does all this what's the point of an ohms meter? What does it do that's useful?

Fair enough.

I use my regulated mods as ohms readers, i never usually build below 1 Ohm. Haven't found it necessary to purchase an ohms reader

I suppose it depends on how fussy you are about exactness and how low you build, I regularly build below 0.20 so require accuracy. None of my mods with the possible exception of the mvp3 pro are that accurate, the koopor plus is a joke, other mods (of mine) round down and some I think round up. I have an Eleaf ohms reader which is 0.06 out on every coil, my wotofo ohms reader seems to be spot on.

I could drive a car without insurance or wearing a seatbelt.
I could use a firearm that doesn't have a safety catch....
I could use efest batteries, or worse, in a mech that is full of burrs...

But it is entirely up to you.....

Well that was a bit dramatic.... Seriously though, besides checking for safety if I was using it with a mech mod, what does the ohms reader do for regulated? My mod tells me everything the ohms reader does so what's the need?

You ever shorted your box due to a dodgy build on an atty?
And which is cheaper - an ohm reader or a fancy box?

Chief, it is up to you if you want to trust your mod for ohm reading however inaccurate it could be, then go for it. I was trained by guys who run every build on a reader first before putting it near any mod, be it Mech or not.

Fine, newer chipped boxes have a bit more inbuilt safety, you could go the rest of your vape journey with nae bother at all just relying on the box. Hat off if that's what happens.

I'm just a bloke who has, after hearing them famous last words 'Ach, it'll be fine...', been picking bits of some cats finger off my shirt 2 minutes later....

And, for future reference - never use a firearm with a dodgy safety catch!!:D
