Hi all, first post here and probably in the wrong place but here goes.

I have only been vaping and off the cigs for about 4-5 weeks now but i have been through a number of devices now trying to find what suits me. turns out it is sub ohm :)

Anyway, i love building stuff and tinkering so i decided to give an RTA ago, turned up this morning and i loaded up a few calculators for coils (i am just using 24 awg kanthal at the minute, so very simple coils) and plugged in the data for a 0.4ohm coil, all looks fine except the wattage they suggest, it comes out at 15w, now this may be correct but wanted to check as all my shop bought coils that i am used to vaping run 50w and up for similar resistance.

Plus everything i have read says lower resistance = more watts

The coil that came with the RTA is a fused clapton at 0.3 that runs at 50-80W

Really sorry if i am missing somethign simple and shouldn't be mucking about with coil building after a few weeks vaping :)

Vape at a wattage that suits you. As long as you're using a regulated mod you'll be fine. I'm currently vaping around 40 watts with a 0.15 (stock mesh coil). I could easily push 80 watts but I'm happy with the flavour and cloud production that gives me plus my coils last longer, I get better battery life and use less juice.

Welcome and have fun building ;)

Just try it.
Start at lower watts and work it up gradually till you get what you want.
If it gets too hot or you burn the wick you have gone too far.

Generally the more metal in a coil the lower the res and the more power it will take to get to whatever temp vape you want.
With claptons and other fancy coils the res is determined by the core wire/s so if you have a simple coil and a fancy coil of the same res then the clapton will require more power to get up to heat because of the extra metal wrapped round the core that has to be heated by the core.

Thank you.

I am currently doing exactly as you say and vaping my homemade coils at a wattage where i am happy with.

Really enjoying the building, i have just bought some different gauge wire, and some clapton wire to try out.

Thanks.

Ramping up was my intention, i was just a little worried it would cause some damage.

So basically ignore the reconmended wattage on the calculators and find what works best yourself :)
