Having trouble with this.

Managed to make 4/5 wrap kanthal coil, 26awg, 3mm ID, got it fitted and wicked no problem.

Have been very careful to trim the legs so they don't stick out the side of the insulator and create a short but when I put it on an istick 30w the reading for the coil ohms jumps around, anywhere from 1 to 3.7 ohms. This to me indicates a short?

Is it possible its shorting out somewhere other than the insulator or positive pin? Or am I just not cutting those legs right?!

Any advice would be great, thanks guys!

Peace.

I've had the positive leg (the one that goes to the wee end plug/cap thingie) shorting against the casing or the other leg wire.
I find it best to shape the legs while the coil is on the drill bit/mandrel.screwdriver etc, so they are nice and straight and parallel , not twisting etc.

When I am placing the legs in the wee slots, pull them tight against the slot whilst leaving the drill / mandrel through the case holes and coil, then bend them over before clipping them.
Your issue sounds like a bad connection as opposed to a short (short would be 0-1 ohm jumping).

If I get an issue with coils on these wee heads, I just scrap it and rebuild, its not worth trying to fix one.

+ 1 on keeping the legs straight, and if you're handy with a drill and have a vice open up the juice holes a touch, works a treat ,I usually do a batch at a time.
