Spaced coils don't need glowing for hotspots as no contact between coils. Only exception would be Ni80 as it normally requires preheating to level out the resistance. Spaced coils are supposed to reduce spitback although I find correct wicking will prevent that. Sometimes you need a spaced coil to utilise airflow & other times touching coils, dependant on gap between mounting points & size of airflow. I do use spaced but only in TC to ensure consistent coil reading.
Try either & go with whichever gives you the best results
