If you had 6 gaps and reduced to 4 gaps then that would imply less gap which implies "higher" juice due to capillary action.

If your juice is too thick then at some point capillary action won't work anyway.

The tank designers may have taken account of capillary action but they will probably have arrived at some happy medium taking all factors into account.
Practically, there's probably little or no difference between 4 or 6.
Are there different grades of cable you could experiment with?

1 is mesh deck. 1 is single coil deck.
Mesh decks usually need more cotton and use more juice so 6 wire cables to keep up
