How To Taifun GT cotton wick for different VG/PG and big clouds!

So I have 2 Taifun's at the moment (not FT but H-Cigar clones) and I went through loads of set-ups before I got what suited me best. I thought I'd post this up in case it helped anyone. I know there's loads of 'how to's' for this atti, but too lazy to see if this version has been done before Obviously this may not be to everyone's liking, but works great for me, good flavour, big clouds, no leaking or gurgles. I only get the leaks with this set-up when the tank is practically empty and I'm being lazy and not filling it

I tried, SS #400 mesh with a ekowool 'flavour wick' to stop leaking, but not keen on SS taste tbh. Tried silica of all shapes and sizes (not big enough clouds), ekowool of all shapes and sizes (not keen on the taste either), a cotton wool chimney build which was pretty good, but not enough flavour and voodoo wool, which is my 2nd favourite, but for me cant beat a micro coil with cotton, which is what I use.

So 1st thing, I pull out the air tube and plastic insulator (for max air flow) and give the whole thing a cracking soak and wash, blowing through the air whole to make it all nice and clean. Wrap a micro coil (I use a little screw driver which is about 2mm), anyway, about 9 or 10 wraps to get 1.1 - 1.3 ohm's.

For 50/50 pg/vg, 60/40 pg/vg and 70/30 p/v (don't use anything with higher pg):

1. attach coil, tail sides down and make sure right over hole
2. grab some organic cotton, tear off a pretty thin bit and tread it through the coil
3. slide the chimney bit on and get it all lined up in grooves and trim down the wick
4. fold the ends of he cotton back on themselves so that it creates a loop, making sure the loop only pokes out about a mm and the other end does not touch the coil (do this for both sides)
5. add some juice, no too much, and tidy up the ends a bit.
6. Chimney cap on
7. Tank on
8. a few dry draws to get the juice onto the wick then big clouds!

For higher VG liquids 60/40 vg/pg, 70/30 vg/pg and 80/20 vg/pg (I don't use any higher vg):

Very similar set-up although the wick is done slightly differently as from testing it, the above will not wick properly if the liquid is thicker. What I do for these thicker liquids is:

1. have longer wick ends poking out so when folded you get a longer loop
2. bit of juice on wick to tidy, then chimney cap on
3. cut the loops close to the chimney, so it's still doubled but the wick is now open
4. tank on
5. a few dry pulls, then bigger clouds!

(photos and numbers should correspond)

Make sure that every time you build, you lube all the O-rings well to avoid issues with snags, leaks and cracked tanks. I also well lube the chimney cap hole so the chimney post slides in and stops the chimney turning. I also press down on the chimney ever so slightly till it stops swivelling after I put my wick through.

Very good informative post

Good advice on the cotton wool. There have been a few people complaining of leaking on initial build. - If this is the case check how the cotton wool has been placed between the cutouts - Some people have even 'layered' another strip of cotton wool over the top of the coil build with no ill effects.

Agree on the 'open air mod' on these otherwise it's like trying to suck a golfball through a straw. ( Although prior to removal, do a test build see if it works for you etc )

Loving these GT's at the mo. - I have the Hcigar & FT one and the Hcigar just seems a better built unit all round.

Cheers matey, aye I tried layering on top, which is ok, but prefer the coil to be free and don't like too much wick, feels like a better flavour, although that could just be me.

I went through 'some' leaking before I hit on this too

I should also mention I use a straightened paper clip (my most used tool in building!) to make sure the wick is seated correctly in the cutouts and that no strands are sticking up which can get caught in the chimney cap when you screw it on and bugger up your alignment.

I do mine in a very similar way. I rebuilt last night and, instead of folding back the excess, I cut it off as normal but I put another bit on top at each gap. I've bookmarked this thread - I'll doing it your way next time!

I use kanthal ribbon (it's the only thing i've tried) but i'd like to get some normal wire. What gauge wire are you using? got a link to where you bought it? Thanks

I use .32 which is 28AWG, I get I from stealthape https://www.stealthvape.co.uk/

Just as a bit of added extra, don't use too much cotton (the pic makes it look like I use more than I do, think it's the light or something) but too much will cause wicking issues

Great post jimmy1mc which illustrates my personal thoughts on the Taifun perfectly. Which are - Unless the 'slots' are filled with wick (either by your method, or 'extra wick on top' or as simple as, 'thicker wick' or any of a zillion other ways to fill the slots) a Taifun will never perform properly.
Your method of tucking the cotton wick ends back on themselves to fill the damned slots, is an easy peasy solution so big heads up.
