Hello everyone! after a short hiatus (courtesy of our seasonal friend the flu) TWIV is back on its feet and ready to bring you this week's vaping stories.

Stickam says farewell
The channel which was the popular home for many vaping networks such as Outcast Vaping, Elixir TV, Vapenet and others delivered an unexpected eviction notice to many of the networks when it announced a rather abrupt ending to it's live broadcasting and chat service on January 31. Many channels were disappointed to lose the sidecam format, but pulled up stakes and moved to other broadcasting sites such as Ustream and Justin.tv. ETA will be updating the links on our community page as the channels are reestablished.








Connecticut brick and mortar
launches
At long last, Connecticut vapers have a venue for the purchase of their vaping needs. Northeast Vapor Supplies opened their doors recently, and many local ecig users can rejoyce at their vaping supplies being more readily available (including me). I had a chance to shoot down to their store in Branford and was greeted by the friendly owners, and a really nice shop. More on NEVS in the days to come.






Psychiatrist endorses ecig use
Dr. Kieth Ablow, Psychiatrist and Fox news contributor published an article recently where he advocates the use of electronic cigarettes, and urges large scale clinical trials:

"Given my experiences and those of numerous clinicians I have spoken with, it would seem to be a good time to conduct large scale clinical trials in which patients who smoke are given electronic cigarettes by their doctors, encouraged to use them and then quizzed on their use of real tobacco weeks and months and years later. If the data generated support the product, then it may be wise for medical insurance companies to offer electronic cigarettes to smokers for free. My bet is they would save lots of money—from the costs of treating heart disease and cancer—down the road."

Dr. Ablow also describes the advantages of electronic cigarettes over conventional "quit smoking" products by their mimicking of smoking behaviors. Full article








New heart study under way
Konstantinos Farsalinos, Cardiologist at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Athens in conjunction with his colleague Dr. Giorgio Romagna have begun a new series of experiments on the effects of tobacco smoke and e cigarette vapor on myocardial cells. Konstantinos and Romagna are most recently known for their case report published : Chronic Idiopathic Neutrophilia in A Smoker, Relieved after Smoking Cessation with the Use of Electronic Cigarette: a Case Report, as well as their study conducted in 2012 on the comparative effects of electronic cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes on the heart. Although the newest study is ongoing, a look at their methods was released by VP Live on a recent broadcast. The video can be viewed .






E cigarettes not a priority
among teen males, study shows

In the February issue of Journal of Adolescent Health, a study by Jessica Pepper et al, showed that although adolescent males were aware of electronic cigarettes, they were not likely to use them.
In the study conducted of 228 adolescent males showed that while many were aware of electronic cigarettes, only 2 of the 228 participants had ever tried an electronic cigarette. The study goes further to show that only 41 of the 228 surveyed (18%) were willing to try an e cigarette if one were offered to them. Of that 18 percent, the majority of those willing to try electronic cigarettes were current smokers (74%) as opposed to non smokers (13%)
This study would contradict what opponents to electronic cigarettes have claimed - that electronic cigarettes could be a "gateway" by which teens would begin using cigarettes. What the study would also suggest is that although smoking in adolescents is admonishable, those who do smoke would seek an alternative to tobacco's effects.

It seems the marketing departments of ecig companies (well, this one at least) are taking a more humorous turn to introduce people to the advantages of using electronic cigarettes. In this advert by E-Lites, the time used smoking cigarettes could be better spent.

Feb 13 deadline approaches for e cig petition

A petition on the whitehouse.gov website has been making the rounds since January of this year. The petition, titled "Prevent the FDA from regulating or banning the sale and use of electronic cigarettes, accessories and associated liquids" is just that. It is a petition to urge the Obama administration to stop the momentum of restrictive electronic cigarette legislation by the FDA. As of the time of this posting, only 4,743 signatures are needed to complete the petition, 20,257 have already signed. in light of the purported 2.5 million e cigarette users in the United States, completing a petition like this should be a snap. So spread the word, time is short! Link to petition

This week we take a look at Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who based upon the sight of his shadow, predicts an early or late spring arrival. This year Phil did not see his shadow, so we can look forward to an early spring!
