I was watching the Daily Politics programme this morning which dwelt not surprisingly on the Farage v Clegg debate of last night on Europe. Other topics were discussed, noteably plain packaging of cigarettes and the emerging evidence that perhaps those measures are not working in Australia.

Tim Montgomerie (ignore your party affiliations for the time being) is a Conservative activist, writer, blogger who for a while wrote for the Times. He participated in the other discussions and was asked his view on the plain packaging debate. I didn't write his exact response down so cannot quote it but in a nutshell he implied that the plain packaging argument for cigs was insignificant compared to the more important debate about the health dividend provided by electronic cigarettes which risked being destroyed by recent decisions in the EU. So true. They wouldn't discuss this further as it was the end of the show but it piqued my interest in his view on ecigs and so I did a bit of googling.

I discovered a podcast in which he and guests discuss various Times articles. One of three topics was ecigs..and Matt Ridleys article which hopefully we are all aware of of 2/3/14 called Smoking (and European Regulation) kills.
Its the last discussion of the three topics (the other two being Ukraine and UKIP) and is about 17 minutes in. Ridley is one of the participants. Worth a listen and maybe we have another influential ecig supporter in Montgomerie. He certainly appeared to be on the TV today.

Yeah, an interesting chin wag. Good to hear that not everyone in the mainstream is naive.

Very interesting piece.. it's encouraging that some in the media are beginning to catch on about pharma lobbying and the opposition of the BMA because they can't claim to be responsible for the health gains.

It would be nice to see pieces like this hit mainstream media outlets.

Ok well BBC news has reposted the segment on plain packaging. That is interesting in itself as Dianne Abbott (imagine this woman as Mayor of London) struggles to say what the evidence is that plain packaging works. Montgomerie's comment at the end is there
