W.H.O. boss lies about vaping
https://velvetgloveironfist.blogspot.com/2023/06/who-boss-lies-about-vaping.html

From the WHO Executive Director Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus -
“When the tobacco industry introduced electronic cigarettes and vaping, one narrative they tried to really sell is, is that this is part of harm reduction. It is not true. It actually is a trap.”

“Kids are being recruited at early age, 10, 11, 12 to do vaping and e-cigarettes because they think that it is cool because it comes in different colours, different flavours and so on. Then they get hooked for life. And most actually move into regular cigarette smoking.”
I guess this quote, chock full of lies, is only to be expected from the absolutely disgraceful attitude the WHO have towards tobacco harm reduction.

On tobacco policy and, worse, on tobacco harm reduction the WHO has terrible form:
The above bullet points are all links to Clive Bates' many articles of the shameful antics of the WHO concerning THR, and are shown in a recent article of his -
World Health Organisation exploits tobacco farmers, the hungry, sick and poor in its crude activism
https://clivebates.com/world-health...e-hungry-sick-and-poor-in-its-crude-activism/
WHO continues its mission to become the most foolish and inept international organisation to bestride the globe. This time with an absurd ill-judged campaign about tobacco farming.

Hmmm. Afaik the truth is Big Tobacco did not introduce e-cigarettes and only became interested in them when smokers were giving up and switching to vaping. According to the site below in 2021 BT had 28% of the e-cigarette market and their main source of profits is far and away from cigarettes. It is estimated around 1 billion smoke compared to around 80 million vapers so the WHO hasn't even managed to make much of a dent in overall smoking rates yet is now spending more effort on vaping and specifically nicotine even though it isn't the nicotine in cigarettes that is so dangerous to your health.

The marketing of e-cigarettes to those below the legal age to vape is a different matter altogether and should be treated as such.

Yes, Big Tobacco did not introduce e-cigs, and were relatively late to the party - the first vape company bought by a tobacco company was Blu by Lorillard Tobacco Company in April 2012 (vaping started to take off commercially in a global sense in 2009).

Unfortunately, the dream that was the UN never quite came to fruition… As with many issues, big corporations hedge their bets by purchasing competitors, and big government (read USA in this case) have bought international policy. The WHO, like the IPCC and most international agencies, is dependent on political and financial support from their biggest donors. Did someone say Capitalism? :22:

The funding of the WHO is quite complex as is I'm sure how, where and on what it decides to spend it. Core funding is about 20% and is based on members' GDP, in 2021 the two biggest were the US($57m) and China ($28m) followed by Japan, Germany, the UK and France. The rest comes from a mixture of various voluntary contributions from member states, other UN organizations, intergovernmental organizations, philanthropic foundations, the private sector, and other sources.

so as you can see, america contributes far more than it’s assessed contribution. it reduced for a bit during the trump era. america and bill gates obvs have quite a lot of influence over it.

Yeah, Bill Gates probably has a lot to answer for, in tandem with Bloomberg (who aggressively opposes THR)...
On the Bill Gates Foundation Tobacco Control page - "Bloomberg Philanthropies is a key partner in this work" -
https://www.gatesfoundation.org/our-work/programs/global-policy-and-advocacy/tobacco-control

But I do note that there is no mention at all (either for or against) of tobacco harm reduction on that page.
