Blood Pressure monitor and vaping

I learned something new, slightly concerning, I have had to use a blood pressure monitor this week and my GP advised to take my reading before vaping as Nicotine causes a short-term increase in blood pressure, heart rate, and the flow of blood from the heart.

I kind of dismissed this but tried a before and after with and without vaping and yes it's true according to my little test.

I'm only at 1.5mg nicotine so god knows how much 18mg would affect it.

It's not scared me enough to quit vaping, I would be lost without it, it was a big enough step to get of the ciggies but still food for thought.

Almost every activity, even eating or drinking will increase blood pressure - it just means the heart is pumping harder than if we were sitting still.

The readings doctors advise are "normal" take into account rises and drops, which is why they like you to be relaxed when taking a reading.

I'd expect that with 1.5mg your increase would have been within acceptable limits, no worse than running for a bus, but I would record them and mention it to your doctor next time.

My GP isn't nicotine tolerant, she want me to quit the nic full stop.

But yes you are right about other activities, the same with Coffee will affect the readings and also a full bladder.

The worst thing to affect my blood pressure is Smok stock coils - a brand new M4 coil primed and sat soaking for an hour lasted 1/4 of a tank before it dry hit (I didn't dare check it after that I was livid!)

Excercise increases heartrate and thus blood pressure and we are all advised to exercise. So i wouldn't be concerned about fluctuating BP through Nic use, it maybe doing some good, after all its the other chemicals in tobacco smoke that kill and cause heart problems

Everything raises and lowers your blood pressure as other's have said.
I've recently bought a blood pressure monitor and have been checking for a different problem than your's. Turns out the problem I have is not blood pressure, which is good but I have learnt a lot by doing it.
Your blood pressure rises and drops throughout the day even if you do nothing so checking it every few minutes is not the think to do and can scare you. My doctor told me to check it first thing in the morning (twice, with a ten minute break between the readings ) and then in the late afternoon /evening (twice again ) and that's it, no more. The reading's will differ slightly but not a great deal if it's good.
If you feel you are concerned about the reading, post your results if you don't mind doing that (or pm me if you prefer ) and I'll tell you if they're ok .
Mine range from 117 to 130 over 68 to 76 with a heart rate of between 56 and 67. This is after resting for 10 minutes.

Edit. Doc said that's pretty good for a 51 year old.

I always get told to stop talking when my BP is checked. Occassionnally I have still yaked away only to get told to shush while it is done again.

As said above everything you do will cause your BP to rise.

Let your Dr deal with the results as fretting about whether there is an issue will cause it to rise.

Any concerns speak with your Dr or even chat with your pharmacist as they can offer advice in these circumstances.

I wouldn't worry too much, as mentioned many things can cause an increase in blood pressure, as @Miss Pepper said even talking can impact readings.

Nicotine is quite a strange drug, in that it can have stimulant and depressant effects, depending on dosage and other variables. Taking into consideration the stimulant side of things, I would expect a raise in BP and heart rate.

Going for a jog will also raise your BP and heart rate- although I do not think vaping is a good alternative for exercise. It would be great if it was though lol, we could all get fit while making clouds.

After just had major surgery and sneaky vapes while in hospital bed my blood pressure didn’t change one bit.
