What's new

Brand new kick lasted less than 2hrs :(

I am using a 2mm bar...but I have 1.5 and 2.5mm bits too.

I have tried from 6/7 to 9/10 wraps on the 2mm

Sometimes playing with the bar size rather than the number of wraps is a good way of varying your resistance. Resistance is all about the length of the piece of wire between the two posts. So a thick bar with less wraps can have the same resistance as a thin bar with more wraps. If you use the steam calculator have a play with the numbers and see how they vary.

I have been playing with my dripper for a couple of months, just doing a few coil changes a week rather than trying to get it all right at once. The flavour I get from the current setup on my dripper is miles better than where I started. Some of that is due to improvements in coiling, but I think most of it is down to the wicking and position of the coil. My dripper is complex because it is dual coil, but if I put a crap build in it I can adjust it or redo it without having to faff with a tank full of liquid. So I am guessing it is swings and roundabouts with the challenges. You will get there. If it were me i would aim for 8 wraps on whatever size mandrel got me the right resistance, put the coil twice the distance from the airhole i thought it ought to be with half the cotton I thought it needed. I haven't built the kayfun so that might be bonkers, but it sure would give you a different vape and therefore a baseline to work with. If in doubt stick up some piccies of the build and I am sure these guys will give you more pointers.

Hi Vic,

Good to see your persevering love.

You will suss it.

The only way to combat the heat is either increase air flow, or increase coil resistance.

However as you have discovered increasing coil resistance will make the build produce less flavour / vapour.

As you do not like it at higher resistance then you have to work out how to increase airflow.

Firstly, make sure your coil is directly over the air flow hole in the deck.

Also helps to lift the coil a bit to maximise airflow coming through the deck.

Do not overwick.
If your coil is stuffed full of cotton and is not pulled up, your wick could be restricting the air flow.

By doing so it will increase the heat and reduce flavour and vapour.

Last of all you can try a vertical "chimney" coil which is well suited to the Kayfun.

YouTube Kayfun chimney coil and you should find a few.

A device like the Magma makes this an easy excercise as it has adjustable airflow so you can adjust to suit.

Good luck :)

Thanks Ash,

I did a 1.1ohm build this morning. 6/7 wraps 28g round 2mm bar. Not exactly a perfect micro coil but pretty tight and tidy. Sat directly above the air hole with about 1mm gap. I have used a little less cotton than before, but may still be a little more than necessary.

The vape is nice and cool, with a decent amount of vapour. The flavour is there but not as strong as I'd like. However, I do feel that I'm getting closer...

Thanks Diche....I feel like I'm getting closer, slowly but surely.

I don't think your approach is bonkers at all. I like the idea of a set no of wraps on a set bar, and then play with position and wicking. I think that will be the next step for me. I have a Vamo arriving any day now which could help take some of the guesswork out of the resistance, just leaving positioning and wick to perfect the vape experience.

As much as this is frustrating...it's also highly addictive and is making me very determined to figure it out! I will not be beaten!!

Ooh I know that feeling :D One advantage is that by the time you've got it your going to be the fastest coiler and wicker in the West lol

Hahaha...I've already halved the time it takes compared to my first attempt! At this rate, I might be able to do it with my eyes shut soon!!

You're thereabouts. Try 6 wraps round your 2.5mm bar, it will allow a for thicker wick and reduce any burning.

Thanks Ment,

I'm gonna give the 2.5mm bar a go and then play with positioning and wick

What sort of build do you use for 1.8? My ideal build for a Kayfun on regulated is 1.8 using 0.3 Kanthal, but my mechs struggle with this.

I only did 1.8 using an Aerotank when I was travelling. It seemed fine, although it dropped off pretty quickly as the battery was used. On the rebuildable front I find below 1.6 seems to work fine for me, but I am not trying to blow my head off :D
