the base doesn't smell of much really.

That is good.
They say if you get a bad batch of nic it smells peppery.
I have never had it but it does happen.
Glad your custard vapes good.
I am not big on steeping but I do find the smell and vape is better after a couple of days so it all sounds good to me.
