Coil diameter

I look at it slightly differently. What determines coil diameter for me is how much wick I need/want to fill the Base. If I need more wick - larger diameter, if less - smaller diameter. I'm comfortable with 2.5-3mm diameter in my Russian clone with extra deep channels. Because of the channels I actually cover them and need to make sure there is no gap or it will leak. Area of the coil stays the same if you want particular resistance, as the bugger it gets the less wraps you need. So to me it's all about wick.

A plus with thick wire and big diameter is strength; no wrecking the coil when you change (cotton) wick. Downside: some clone deck-screws are poor, can be difficult to fix thick wire under them.
