Hi Guys

Just a quick one I hope

Coil spacing . . . . does the resistance increase or decrease the closer the coils?

I figure the closer the coils, the less amount of wire you use the lower the resistance and quicker the heat hence micro coil performance

Have I got that right?

For example

a 6 wrap .20 Kanthal micro coil gives me 2.4 ohms but if coils were spaced say 2mm apart more it would give me say 2.8 or more (not that I would use a 2.8 coil)

Just trying to get my head around getting lower resistance with less coils on something like .32 Kanthal

Would larger coils give me higher resistance?

What I'm looking for is something 1.0 - 1.2 ohms using either
.20 Kanthal
.32 Kanthal
.9 Kanthal Ribbon

Don't have a go if i'm wrong here.
I think it's the diameter of the coils + the thickness of wire + the distance from posts that all add up. As in it's the amount of wire used in length, as opposed the distance between coils.
with the two wire sizes
0.2 is about 3 coils and 0.32 is more like 5 or 6 coils. Never done ribbon.
I'm not 100% sure, but it 's not for out.

PS. 5 turns of 0.25 kanthal gets me 1.3-1.4 ohms on a protank head.
 
spacing plays a huge difference in ohms. simply because with .32 mm kanthal at 4 wraps space i get around say 1.3-1.6 ohms yet if i micro coil them together so all coils are touching to get around 1.6 ohms i normally have about 8 wraps. i know kanthal is supposed to be based on ohms per meter but this seems to change if the coil is squeezed together in a micro coil.
 
are you quoting AWG on the kanthal or mm thickness as its a common confusion. im using .32mm ( which is AWG 28 ) if you want around 1ohm on .32 mm try about 5 coils touching ( micro coil fashion ). if im doing dual coils i can do 12-16 wraps and still come in at around 1.8-2 ohms per coil ( so around 0.9 to 1 ohm build
 
So would 4 wraps touching and 4 wraps spaced, using the same length of wire equal the same resistance? and which would heat up quicker?

and I'm not using AWG so its .32. I tried 5 as a micro and it came out as 1 ohm, but took forever to heat up, so used .20

touching with give lower resistance. also the width of coil will make a difference too depending on what your wraping it around
 
Yeah, I don't realy understand the science but I've got 14½ wraps of .3mm kanthal here giving me !.6/7 Ω's :-/

... and if the coils are touching why doesn't it just short across the coil? :-/

i think by touching it acts as a single piece of kanthal ( rather than a coil ) much like when you twist 2 pieces together so in essence it reads it as say 5mm thick single bit of kanthal . when they are spaced it gives the kanthal length. when they are touching it makes its a single thick piece hence the ohms are almost based on how long your coil is from end to end rather than how long the strand of kanthal is in the loop itself.

14 wraps!! bet that takes forever to heat up on .3 that should give 2 ohms how its giving you 0.6ohms is beyond me?!

Going on the size of the coil seems to make sense

but I make 6 wraps of .20 in a micro coil for my protanks and get 2.4 ohms, I do 6 spaced on an RBA and get 1.6 its all very strange

Gonna have to start keeping a coil diary
