I hope someone can give me some guidance on this.

I have been vaping for about 4 years now and last year I was told I had type 2 diabetes. It's betting controlled with diet and medication and I'm pretty sure that if I was still smoking the analogues my health would be far worse but I am worried about the effects that nicotine may have on blood sugar.

I have been having trouble finding impartial advice online. It seems that some doctors have trouble separating smoking from vaping and my own gp doesn't really seem to know.

Does anyone have some insight into this?

Type 2 here, Doc more than happy I vape and not smoke now, cholesterol lower and blood pressure down , I dont think the nic does anything to sugar levels but may be wrong

hi @carcosa :)

I've had type 2 diabetes for 13 years now (diagnosed aged 39), smoked for the first couple of those then used Swedish snus for the last 10 or so , before starting vaping 3 months ago. As far as I'm aware the nicotine doesn't have a direct effect on blood sugar per se , though of course Heart/circulation issues might be another matter. However I do keep a very close check on my blood sugar levels ( always have since diagnosis) and in the last few months I've never seen any increase in BS levels , either measured in the mornings after fasting , or short term spikes after vaping, so I can confidently say that for me at least Vaping ( and specifically the flavourings) has zero, or at least negligible, effect on my blood sugar :)

There are quite a few on here with diabetes and as far as i can recall noone has any problems. Think you just need to watch the flavourings because of the sweetners / sugars. But as long as you monitor yourself you will be ok :)

Other will be along shortly and offer more info / own experiences x

'' in the last few months I've never seen any increase in BS levels'' ...just to clarify...i'm referring of course to blood sugar, as opposed to the alternative interpretation , which may well have increased since vaping ;)

Thanks for the replies so far. I have only recently been diagnosed with this and I'm a bit anxious about it if not flat out scared. Knowing what's okay and what's not is a bit bewildering.

PS. Although I've never given up nicotine since I developed diabetes, my HbA1c BS levels are similar to a non-diabetic , controlled by diet/meds/exercise. Although then of course it's possible that without nicotine they would be even better, I'm pretty sure a vape is much better than a cake ;) I also think that if I gave up nicotine I would likely eat more , put on weight and suffer from all the cardiovascular consequences of such ie vaping must be good for diabetics (*these self justifying opinions are my own and should not be construed as advice etc etc ;)

I have had type 2 for 10 years. Smoked heavily (2+ packs a day) during that whole time until I took up vaping 4 months ago. My diabetes has stayed stable throughout the whole period.

Just a note too, most sweeteners used in flavorings are safe for diabetics, they use sucralose instead of sugar (sugars would gunk up the coils pretty fast and render them useless) But always check :)

I know how you must feel, it's VERY scary when first dropped upon you. Doctors tell you precious little and the Diabetic Nurse is full of shit!

If I can, I'm going to recommend you e a copy of a book called: Type 2 Diabetes (The First Year) ISBN: 978-1-84119-804-0

Easy reading and tells you much more than the NHS Pro's will ever.

I vape 36mg and sweet flavours with no bad effects.
