Diluting VG

Hi all,

Just wanted to know what peoples preferred dilution liquid is for diluting VG. I heard ionized water was the way to go? I buy my VG from Boots for cheapy cheapies so just need to find the right method for diluting it. I use tap water fo my last bottle but this is supposed to be a bad thing? why?

If it does have to be ionized water is there a shop that will do it for me to pick up?

Thanks all.

Buy a bottle of cheap vodka or use distilled water.
do not use de-ionised water.

De-ionised is filtered not heated or distilled, so could potentially, and probably does contain microorganisms of some kind, it would be put in unsterilized containers and stored as an industrial product not a food.

10-20% distillation for the water is ideal. Also, saline? I remember seeing that somewhere...

I might just do what oldhippydude does and just use the VG pure and dilute it with the PG then add flavours and stuff. What I don't get is, when shops sell a 50/50 mix it's not really 50 VG is it cause it's been diluted previously...

Also Sarin are you a doctor or something or are you pasting in chunks off Wikipedia? Haha

Seeing as I work in research it would be nice to have some references for the information in your last 2 comments

Distilled water rather than tap water due to the bacteria that it contains. Your stomach being very acidic kills the bacteria when you drink the tap water, your lungs however do not have this ability and are the perfect breeding ground. This is the danger with legionnaires disease entering the lungs in the form of aerosolized water from say a shower that hasn't been used for a long time.

If bacteria in tap water is the problem then boiling for 5 minutes would sort that problem.
If chemicals in the water are the problem you would have to know whether and when they came off in the distillation process as you could be concentrating them if they came off at a lower or similar temperature to water.
I am sure you can buy distilled water that is pretty pure but those that do it themselves do they know why.

So oldhippydude because I make 50/50 juices would it make no real difference if I used 5ml of pure VG in a 10ml bottle instead of 5 ml of pre diluted? All my nicotine and flavourings are PG

I really do not know what will work for you.
I mainly use drippers which I think handle high vg better.
All I know is what works for me.
All my mixes now are 100ml so I do not have to mess with syringes for my vg/pg.
In my earlier smaller mixes for protanks I did do more thinning.
You are doing higher pg than me so that might work.
Experiment and find what works for you and your kit.
As with many things vape related there is no right answer, only what works for you.

Lol, Doctor no, maybe one day but not a doctor of medicine. Chemistry is my game and the comments were things that i remembered during the slightly boring bio-chemistry modules that i decided to take and wish i hadn't.

Here's a link to a research paper in which saline was assessed in its aiding of cystic fibrosis sufferers where the saline was thought to improve lung function.

Hypertonic saline inhalation in cystic fibrosis?salt in the wound, or sweet success?

and an easier read i found with the main facts:

Broncho Saline (inhalation) medical facts from Drugs.com

Legoinnaires disease is well known for being caused by aerosolized water droplets, the main cause being the non-regularly used shower. Other notable nasty lung infecting bacteria include pneumonia and bronchitis.

What they do is use 100% VG and fill an empty bottle to half it's volume, it doesn't matter what else goes in that bottle as long as the total volume is not more than double the VG volume that they put in. Where confusion often comes in is the fact that most flavourings are PG based. If you want 50/50 in a 10 ml bottle using 20% flavouring then you need 5ml of 100% VG, 2ml of flavouring (counts as PG) and 3ml of 100% PG. Total VG 5ml (50%) and PG 5ml (50%). You could argue that the actual flavour isn't PG but the volumes are too marginal to worry about it. Hope that helps and i'm not teaching you to suck eggs. :)

I have a picture of nasty lung infecting bacteria tiptoeing across a hot coil ... assuming they first survive swimming around in a juice mix containing PG.

ClassiKool's VG is 99.9% ... it's lovely thick stuff and I've never had a problem sucking it up a syringe, even in cold weather. Mind you, I only use 5ml and 10ml syringes for VG.
There's a neat tube thingy sold by Leisure Liquids ... Bryan's drawing needle ... which might solve the problem for you and obviate all this dilution malarky.
The 5ml and 10ml syringes seem to draw up VG fine but the drawing needle is handy when the syringe can't reach down into a bottle.
