I’d say I’m jealous but... mmmm, America, civil war, etc, nope! :P
what they need to do is legalize it in the deep south and midwest where all those crazy ppl come from.
Once everyone is stoned no one is getting up off the couch to run around and fight a civil war

Boris and team have repeatedly stated that they are following the science, so they are rightly questioned whenever they deviate from that. When political expediency trumps scientific advice, which is clearly the case here, then he has decided to accept the higher risk and is responsible for the consequences.

The problem is without any compromise too many people would just totally ignore the rules over Christmas and do whatever they want. The hope is that the sensible people will do what's right anyway and those who would otherwise have fucked off the rules will instead limit the damage they do.

At least that's my understanding.

that makes no sense.

I understand the thinking behind it (the nation's morale) but it's a nonsense approach. The ones who would ignore the rules will still ignore the rules ... that's always going to happen. But now the "sensible people" who think this is stupidly risky and would not be prepared to risk the lives of their loved ones for one xmas will be choking on their piggies in blankets knowing that carnage is taking place in households up and down the land. Boris is saying a few more deaths is a price worth paying. Fuck stats, one death in my family is not worth that price.

It won't do much for my mental health ... fortunately Rishi knows that and has picked another £500m off the magical money tree for Mental Health in England. It's either that or he's earmarked one of the 18,000 new prison places for me.

Whether it makes sense to you or not, that's my impression of the rationale behind the decision.

The whole thing is nonsense but an enormous amount of people in this country are a bunch of entitled bellends who act like the whole world will end over night unless Christmas is celebrated as if nothing else is going on in the world. Personally, I couldn't care less about Christmas this year. Ain't no fucker coming anywhere near my house regardless of whether they're friend or family. If you don't live with me then you ain't welcome. Unfortunately, many people up and down the country don't feel like that. I also get that the government are treading a very fine line in keeping support for the government and in keeping public compliance.

aye, as a rationale it doesn’t make sense though. i think it’s more likely a popularity exercise. i could just see stories in the tabloids about a poor person fined on xmas eve for crossing a council area to see his poor old granny.

i see sturgeon seems to be deviating from their plan already.

Bubble is a sore point for me :12:

I took my mum out shopping, we were at the checkout together when the cashier questioned "are you with him?" and she replied "he's my bubble".....
I know I've piled on a few pounds during 2020 but I thought that was a bit harsh!

Sure it does. You give an inch in the hopes that people won't take a mile. I think people are generally more compliant when they feel they're getting something out of it.

Ultimately, the government is between a rock and a hard place. I think a lot of common sense people would be quite shocked at just how aggressive the pushback would be against more draconian measures over Christmas. You think we wouldn't have mass protests against a full Christmas lockdown were one to be announced? You think everyone would comply?

Your bad press scenario is easily avoided by simply giving instructions, privately, to not enforce certain offences over Christmas.

i don’t think that logic is very sound. it only concurs with the rest of their approach since march in that it contradicts itself. you are permitted to mix with three households for five days at xmas, but you probably shouldn’t because it’s dangerous. just apply your own personal sense of responsibility.

it’s stupid.

as for mass protests i think it would hardly be likely.
