Hello Supermac
Here is how I went about things:
Basic ecigs, wot do look like cigarettes, I started with, and still use for outs and abouts from the pocket convenience:

Here is another example of such a product with a good rep:
http://www.ukecigstore.com/e-cigarettes/starter-kits/innokin-aio-pcc-kit
You will find that their are loads of discount codes that can be used scattered over the web, ie, for jacvapour, best one is ECR9 from
http://www.e-cig-reviews.com/ for a 20% discount code. For the second link to ukecigstore wot I pasted above, there is a discount code in this very forum, belive it or not in the Discount Code page linked at the top of the forum.
A level up from these, for more power, variety, and running time would be ego style devices (or, batteries), such as
http://www.vapertrain.com/product/skb, or
http://www.vapeescape.co.uk/the-ve-riva-1100-deluxe-kit~151, or
http://alba-vapours.co.uk/starter-kits/anyvape-tecab-360mah-clearomiser-kit, as three random examples, the last being just a tad more different, just for a wee bit more scope of variety, ignore terms like ego-c, ego-w, ego-t kits, I would personally say, half the time that is refering to the set-up a vendor is selling a starter kit as, and you do not have to purchase starter kits, they are what they say on the tin, a handy intro to that sort of kit, you easily just buy a battery or two, but, try and get one with an ego/510 connection! Most of them will have that sort of connectivity. That leaves far more scope for what you can use on your battery/device.
What you can use on ego style device: Cartomizers, clearomizers, atomisers, tank clearomisers, and other things, but, this is a good start, I'll link to an example of each:
Cartomizer:

Clearomizer:

Atomizer:

Tank Clearomizer:

Tank clearomizers are really just clearomizers, but clearomizers as a whole can give you a range variable taste intensity, which you will find can be a very personal experience, a lot of people will swear by vivi nova tanks, as per last link above, and they look great, taste decent and are very compatible with a variety of devices, whereas, not linked to, but in my eyes better for taste, but a wee bit more leaky, would be a Kanger T3, which isn't as compatible with as wide a variety of devices, and to tell you unnecessarily finicky stuff for you right now, it would be at an ego level, and it is absolutely no effort on anybodies part to buy a 510/ego adaptor, and cheap too.
Oh, everything boils down to being an atomizer at the end of the day, apart from half of the Boge cartomizers ever made, which do f*** all. (Personal demons coming to the fore here)
At the same level as ego devices, but with a bit of a twist, would be variable voltage ego devices, meaning that you can smoke/vape your flavoured eliquid at a variety of temperatures, which can change how something tastes, and the warmth of the vape, giving the experience and added dimension, which you may be interested in experiencing, a couple more links:

http://www.switch2-ecigs.com/Innokin_iTaste_V3_Variable_Voltage_Express_Kit_p/kititastev2t.htm
And from there you go on up to Mod devices, shuffle over to rebuidable atomizers, explore flavours and diy eliquids, and what have you, but I want to gauge out my own eyes now.
I'd say that if you want to start with an ecigalike, either link at the top of this post would do you well, and if you wanted to start with a bit more power and scope and fiddliness, plump for a vv ego device with a vivi nova, as an example.
