Hello. I am new round here and new to vaping. And I accidentally have given up smoking... Rather crazy.
I had no intentions on giving up and vaping didn't really interest me. I have used those ecigs from Tesco on occasion, actually had one in the car for a while, but that was just an emergency thing when out of cigarettes or lighters. Certainly never stopped me from smoking.
Last week I was round some friends, ran out of fags and was too lazy to go to the shop. Friend had a spare eGo, gave the starter kit to me and a 30ml bottle of juice and I haven't had a cigarette since. And I am not even missing them. But it has not been all plain sailing. It is day 5 now and for the last 2 days I had withdrawal symptoms. Same as when I was on the patch a couple of years ago. Insatiable hunger and insomnia. Also the juice is too strong for me and I feel a bit spaced out a lot of the time. Will have to dilute it. Can I just add Glycerine to the bottle?
I am a soap maker in my spare time, so I always have some around. But, being a soapmaker made me realize how shockingly little regulations there are when it comes to juice. And I hope you don't hate me, but I think it is time the EU starts looking at this asap. Stuff regulating the rest around ecigs. We don't really know what we inhale, and I have seen some flavours that are most definitely perfumes, not food flavours (dragon blood for example). I saw that Hangsen supplies MSDS sheets. Not seen it from any vendors here or in the US. These sheets would help immensely if one of the flavour components proves to be hazardous when inhaled, but they would help even more for the issue with tank cracking. Lavender Essential oil is a notorious plastic destroyer. Now, we are not smoking Lavender. But artificial fragrance producers add parts of other fragrances to add depth to others. So Linalool (one of the fragrance parts that make up Lavender oil) could be present in your Vanilla flavour. And crack your tank, or eat a seal or react with the metal parts.... But I will write about that another time.
For now I sit back and enjoy the sweet smell of Berry Mix...

Interesting perspective, I've been wondering about this myself. Although I feel like vaping is many magnitudes less harmful than smoking, there must be some effect by inhaling some of these flavour compounds. Has anyone else on here got any relevant research?

Welcome, by the way!

Well that's the most interesting "i'm new" posts i think i have ever read anywhere! what a great introduction :)

and a soap maker..... i bet you could give some new and interesting flavor ideas!!

Welcome onboard.

Hey madpiano, fellow newcomer myself, so welcome!

Some interesting points you raise there and I can certainly concur about the perfumy taste and smell of some of the liquids I have tried. It does make you wonder what is in some of them. Regulation appears to be a big talking point and will almost certainly come in some way or another, but let's hope it's a good thing that does not take away from the vaping experience and freedom to home brew or buy stronger mg liquids.

Phew. Thanks. I thought I might be hunted because I am pro-regulation, as long as it is sensible and workable for small producers and sellers.
Perfumy taste? Could be Lavender or Rose oil in the flavour. Both are perfectly edible and taste interesting, but not sure I'd want to cape them.
Also I am not sure if cosmetic fragrance oils wouldn't actually be safer to vape compared to flavour oils. Cinnamon is a good example. Perfectly fine to eat. But will cause severe skin rashes, even in small amounts when applied to skin. Most cosmetic fragrance oils are also candle safe, so I'd feel better about inhaling them. Downside is, they are actually oils. Due to their application in cosmetics, they would be impractical to be made with PG or VG.

I mix my own juice. That way I know exactly what I'm vaping. Welcome to the planet. :)

Hello Clint. Thanks for the welcome! Not sure about the "you know what's in it", unless you go flavour free. That's my point. Food flavours may contain things that are safe to eat, but could be dangerous to inhale, even if it is just an irritant and nothing worse.
But this is, where the EU heads could really help, if they wanted to. I can't imagine any, but the largest companies, being able to afford independent clinical trials. The EU could sponsor those and then vendors could demand MSDS sheets from manufacturers to ensure all ingredients are safe.
In cosmetics, we are lucky. All the tests have been done over the last 80 years or so. Partly sponsored by public bodies, partly by the big companies. So we are all set there. As a soap maker I am heavily regulated by the EU and the hoops I have to jump through to sell soaps is crazy, but it's do-able. Even for really small producers as the lab tests on my ingredients has already been done.

I would never use flavourings that contain oils, fats or sugar. I think each to their own tho, nobody is saying that vaping is risk free but in my opinion, compared to smoking, I would say that the risks are far less regardless.

As Captain Aubrey said: "The Lesser of two weevils", right? HA HA HA... hilarious...
