Hi I have been rebuilding my Protank using .25mm Kanthal and 2.5mm silica wick/cotton wool.

I am using a 510 battery.

After the rebuild and loading the tank with VG liquid nicotine the first few hits are very good and it vapes very well but after about 3/4 hits the coil shorts out leaving me to fiddle around with the connection to the battery or disassemble and move the coil about till it picks up again, although when I do this it is only good for anther 3/4 hits.

When I first started rebuilding about 2 weeks ago the first few coils I rebuilt worked completely fine this has only staarted happening for the last 10ish coils I have rebuilt.

Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong?

is the coil resistance to low? your battery may not fire if the resistance is below a certain level. i had similar problems with protank 3 dual coils. Or maybe the coils move with heat, could try building a coil with the wraps closer together. Im no expert though, just ideas :-)

Ah I think you may have cracked it, thinking now about it what worked in the beginning was 5 turns of wire were recently I hve been using 3 :)

If the coil touches or over laps will it short the coil out?

Bit of a noob question also but how do I test the resistance?

You need a multimeter or an ecig ohm meter if you were using 25kanthal with 3turns that was probably coming in under 1ohm
Here's a chart to give you a rough idea

I've seen some YouTube vids about rebuilding coils and most of them recommend that the coils be squeezed together on the wick. Doesn't this short them out?

Well I thought it would of but I have just rebuilt a coil with 6 turns and it is producing the best vaping experience I have ever had from my Kanger and the wires were closely packed together and touching so I guess not.

On plus note it is no longer shorting out after a few hits :D:D:D:D

Yeah that is what my original post was about mate, I was rebuilding tanks and they were shorting out after a few hits :(

Maybe that's why they either blowtorch or dry burn the coils on the wick before compressing them together so as to oxidise the metal surface and isolate the loops from each other.
