Kayfun BB RBA - A Review (?)

On one of the threads "MTL and custards" I read custards taste better at higher ohms - Here is a pic of it. 1.6 ohms at 13.5 Watts, ran half a tank till morning and as you can see its already toasted. 9 wraps coming in at ~1.6 ohms

Reverting back to 7 wrap build. Here are the build pictures.

7 wraps of NI80 0.3mm (29 awg)

The cotton slides thru without much resistance.. Please advise if this is still too thick and long.

And the below after getting tucked in

And the reading and wattage on the mod

In my humble opinion, 11w for a custard will never get you great results no matter what cap you use.

ok, what do you reckon, Do I go higher or lower. its a 50/50 liquid currently on the tank, Vanilla custard by Custard Monster - 24 mg Nic

Okay, I’ll give it a shot and help as best I can…

Firstly, I will say that it is difficult to get the full flavor of a custard in a high ohm vape. It is possible to come very close, and I have managed a reasonably good custard flavor from my Steamshell f ex.

You say your wicking isn’t too tight, but by the pics, it looks like a lot of cotton. Too much cotton can choke off the flow of juice to the coil. And using high nicotine salts is not kind on your wicking either. This may add to the problems you’re experiencing :hmm:

Here’s my best guess: it looks like the airflow pin is very tight, and for my vaping, 11 watts for a 1.3ohm coil is very high. You’re probably cooking the juice, since it’s a very small chamber. To get the custard flavor where I like it, I had to use a 1.2mm pin on my Steamshell. Far looser than I like, but I never could achieve that with a 0.8mm pin. If I were you, I would loosen the draw a wee bit and reduce your wattage down to 5watts, and then work your way up until the flavor is where you want it.

Hope this helps :22:

Thanks, Let me try that, I ll drop down the wraps to 5. So something near 1 ohms, and drop down the wattage. I ll try opening up the airflow as well. Right now at 3 full turns on the Aerokon from the fully closed position.

Is this still too much cotton, it slides on the coil with zero resistance. I think if I go lower might cause a flood.
Dropped the wraps to 5, reading at 1.01 ohms

I do get a bit of flavor, when the mod is kept aside for a while and diminishes after a few draws, does that mean I need to go thinner on the cotton.
5W give a weird taste on the setup. Almost metallic. dialed it up to 7.5W

Weird thing I only get a sudden flavor when a pop sound is made from the chamber. And when the draw is long. Does this also mean too much cotton.

Yep, it does sound like a wicking issue :hmm:

If you think you can’t use less cotton, try trimming ends with a diagonal clip upwards (a la Mark Todd). Don’t stuff the juice wells, the cotton should be somewhat loose. Also make sure the cotton is just long enough to reach the bottom of the juice wells. A sharp bend makes the capillary action more difficult.

The Kf is pretty forgiving, and if you use too little cotton, it will worst case cause a bit of gurgling ;)

Checked just now, exact same height as mine. But there is no “right” height, it’s trial and error after individual taste ;)

I'm just speculating here - I've never had good results with any rebuildable if the cotton slides through the coil with little to no resistance. I'd go the other way - use MORE cotton so there is resistance. If it can only wick three quarters of a tank before it starts getting nasty there is a possibility the centre of the wick is burning out as it is not in firm contact with the cotton.

Use a but more wick and fluff the ends/thin if necessary, but I've never had a problem with a Kayfun MTL deck wicking 50/50 juice if the juice wells are filled with cotton - as long as it isn't packed silly tight it should wick 50/50 without any issues.
