Key Workers

A company I do all the IT for for sells delivered ready meals to the elderly. We have a website but most of our customers prefer to order by phone so we run a call center in Edinburgh. We have a couple of hundred thousand elderly, vulnerable customers who rely on us to get food.

As you can imagine demand has skyrocketed. We are doing more orders per hour this month than we did per day a month ago.

The website and warehouse systems have held up (It bloody should, we built it to be scalable) but we need people to man the phones and they need training

I've got another 25 PCs to build tomorrow for home-workers.

Not on the list of keyworkers but I care for livestock in different areas so am still out working. The benefit is that there are only 1/2 of us on the yards/farms at any one time so social distancing is relatively easy, hygiene is paramount at all times anyway so aside from using more disposal gloves than usual, not much has changed. My biggest concern is metal fixtures & fittings, gates etc as many places have adjoining public footpaths so avoiding touching them constantly is difficult althou my elbows are getting proficient at it

I work at a double glazing firm , construction is counted as essential so we are still in but we are installing upmarket windows in millionaires houses how can that be essential ?
Also my mrs works in a coffee factory which is food production so classed as essential but this week they have non stop been running a product we dont even supply to this country and gets exported to Poland , how is that essential ?
It seems the working classes that cant work from home are seen as expendable and are being hung out to dry.
Massive respect goes out not just to the health workers but to those poor mainly women working on tills in supermarkets and convenience stores with hundreds of people in close contact with them every day with no protection whatsoever

I'm on the point of jacking my job.

Have a self-isolating high risk family member at home and I'm rubbing shoulders with hundreds of factory workers whose numbers are dwindling daily over covid concerns. Can't afford to but don't want to risk infecting another.

Unable to state exactly my work but our IT Systems ensure fuel from the barrel to refineries / depots / forecourts is processed and delivered we run 24/7 - 365 days, we do have some self isolated but it looks like I'm in for a lot of overtime

I was shocked to find I'm classed as a Key Worker. As a result my daughter is at school, even now. Yet my job, is to look after her

it seems so. We, as parents of a special needs adult, are Key Workers. I've had that confirmed, today. Shame she's in the at risk group, so can't attend school any longer.
But then I don't consider us so. These places are for the kids of workers the country needs. I simply don't think the parents of SN kids should quality. Unless they are professional careers or health workers.

My missus is a key worker, working at the DWP at the moment. Not only has it lost a lot of staff to self-isolation, they've also sent a lot of people home because the offices can't adhere to the 2m social distancing measures with a full compliment of staff. So skeleton crew and yesterday was the single busiest day ever for fresh claims, mostly from the self employed who in desperation are claiming Universal Credit because the government haven't unveiled any plans to help them. I just hope that when/if Boris annouces something to help the SE they will be able to extracate themselves from UC and claim the new package instead of being tied into UC forever.
