Hi all
So been on the rta tanks a couple of weeks now and seem to be getting the hang of things with a lot of help and advice from here..
One small niggle I have is that after say 2 days my coil is burning..not badly but I change it..
I don’t go above 10 watts usually and coils are generally 1.5-1.8 ohm they vape perfect for a day or two then seem to burn..
My thoughts are to try a more hardy coil build so would appreciate it if you rta coil users could post your favourite MTL coil builds it would likely be a help to a few of us newbie rta users.
Mine is
1.6 ohm,0.25mm wire kathal A1,2.5mm x6 wraps @9.5-10 watts This one is generally burning after a few days on manabush Nakomis
Thanks.

What do the coil and cotton look like when you remove them?

Might be the juice. Some juices will gunk up the cotton. Some juices contain Maltol (not Ethyl Maltol) which can blacken the coil...

Might be the cotton - either the type or how you wick. Some attys need if tight in the coil, some a touch looser. Tails could be swelling and choking. Some cottons are better suited for MTL RTAs, some for bigger coils and more watts. I use Muji in most RTAs, if they're really finicky, I use Rayon.

I would suspect the above before your coils, as they sound quite conservative

Hello,

I usually build within that general range as well. When you say the coil is 'burning' do you mean flavour is gone, taste is off and coil is all gunked up?

If so then, this is typically a function of the eliquid. As far as I know, there's not much you can do with coils and hardware that would make a significant difference. Potentially, spaced coils, as opposed to micro, would be a bit better.

You can change wick and clean the coil as opposed to replacing it. Dry burning is a cleaning option that's less in favour these days but you can wipe the coil until it's clean.

When you say burning are you getting a burnt taste or does it look black?

My fave build is either geekvape “mtl” fused clapton (ni80) 5 wraps, 3mm id or ni80 28 awg, 7 wraps 2.5/3 mm id.

Yes goes black on the top of cotton in the wick and get a burnt taste..not overwhelming but enough to know it’s there and spoil the flavour..
What ohm are theses and can you mtl on a sub ohm coil build like a 0.5ohm?

Umm think the 28awg comes out to about a 0.8ish and the other is 0.6/0.7. So technically they are sub ohm but fine with mtl.

I usually use muji when wicking mtl.
This ones a week old and will need a rewick tonight (and a clean off) but thats just down to whats in the juice. Theres no burnt taste though.

Iknow i know coil needs straightening lol.
Try using a little less cotton maybe? Just so theres a bit of resistance there but not tight.

Yes you could use a MTL rta with a low ohm coil but the airflow construction wouldn’t allow enough air for the coil to cool down properly so the result would often be a dryhit. Especially since the liquid channels are smaller. Also to get a better flavour MTL rta’s have small chambers that don’t have enough space to fit anything but a microcoil.

A few days vaping manabush is enough to make my coils and wick look like a tar pit. I don't think it's anything to do with the coils.

I just pull the cotton out, give the coil a couple of very gentle heats until the crud goes hard and flakey, brush it off, wash it under the tap, dry and re-wick.

As others have said, just pull the cotton out clean up the coil and rewick. The actual coil itself should last weeks.

Further to recommendations (thanks all) I'm finding spaced coils on 28AWG, while fiddly to work with, certainly help reduce heat on the wick.

No longer do I go to remove a wick and find the middle is nearly burnt through or indeed come out as two separate bits, LOL.

TL/DR

Try spaced, it might be the solution :D
