Welcome to POTV
In my humble opinion I would go for something big straight off. I started Vaping 2 years ago and have several tanks and batts and just venturing onto RBA's and Mech Mods
You could start off with something like a CE5 kit
http://www.evape.co.uk/aspire-ce5-bdc-starter-kit.html
Which is ok to start off with, if you were not a heavy smoker, but to really start getting something that produces clouds other than an RBA or RDA you need to get into tanks
Tanks
Personally I am a huge fan of the Kanger Protank range, and even though I have protanks 1,2 and 3 I still keep coming back to the Protank 1
As an alternative to the protanks, and if you don't mind a huge unit, Vapescape do a 5ml Hypertank which performs the same as a protank but can hold twice the juice, in fact the amount of juice outlives your battery life.
Batteries and Mods
The basic 900mah Evod batteries are cheap but do the job, but I found I was always charging them. which was fine as I always had one in use and one on charge.
Eventually I got a Vamo V5 which allows you to adjust the Voltage/Wattage to suit your taste, also I've found that some juices taste better at different Watts, and as you can adjust the Watts you can adjust the amount of vapor production, but unless you know the "safe" limits, you can burn your atomizer and juice, I tend to push it to its limits.
Vendors I use alot are

When you have been using something like a Vamo, Egos seem a little pointless, or oly as an emergency unit. Saying that you can get an 1100mah Ego Twist which allows you to adjust the voltage.
Juices
Juices generally range for £2 to £8 for 10ml and come in various mixes of PG (Propylene Glycol) and VG (Vegetable Glycol) some even add Distilled water to make it more of a smoother vape
a general rule of thumb is as follows:
More PG = More Flavour and better throat hit, smaller clouds
More VG = Reduced flavour and bigger clouds
Vendors I have used that I repeatedly go back to are
http://www.evape.co.uk/evape-black-label-premium-e-liquid-juice.html
http://www.bigjuiceuk.co.uk/
Evapes Black label range is really good and averages out at £3.99 a bottle. Their mix is 50 PG / 50VG and distilled water. Generally a smooth vape with decent clouds
Favorites:
Caramel Mocha
Pina Colada
Cherry Bomb
Vanilla
Bigjuiceuk is really good for flavours and they have some strange and wonderful flavours. Their mix is 60PG and 40 VG so their juices taste awesome but the cloud production, although still decent, is not as much as Evapes. but I tend to buy more from here (just spent another £60 lol)
Most juices come in 6mg,9mg,11mg,12mg,18mg,and 32mg
I started on 18mg which is quite strong, and on 20 a day I would start with this level, although now I don't crave such a harsh throat hit I am on 9mg, occasionally 11mg. If I need a stronger TH I up the wattage on my Vamo
What is your style?
There are some monsterous units out there, and the Vamo in full 18650 mode with a Hypertank on top is borderline.
It boils down to is how big can you go without feeling weird, or looking strange, that and where you will use it.
If its down the pub, and want to be discreet, an Ego style or Smok Pipe would be suitable, but if you are driving and vaping at home, go bigger!
Everyone is different, everyone's preference is different, its what works for you and keeps you off the stinkies
Hope that helped, any questions let me know. I am by no means an expert, and there are plenty on here that are. But just remember, Vaping is a learning curve, some may call it a science, to me it is a hobby full of great gadgets and the search for YOUR ultimate vape
Happy vaping
