rethinking flavour

I require flavours at abotu 30% of the mix. Whatever a super taster is, I think I am the opposite.

I like the idea of lower concentrate blends, and I might try it. But I don't hold much hope because I find some commercial juices (digbys and baccy roots come to mind) a bit weak willed.

i would suggest puffing unflavoured liquid for a week, then mix something up at 1% and try it. you never know, you might be surprised.

I'll add a another perspective to all this: In my day job I've had to study human perception - quite deeply. One of my favourite researchers is Richard Gregory, who first suggested that perception is mostly memory. His work looks at visual perception, but the same applies to olfactory perception.

The crux of the biscuit is that rather than getting real-world qualia from your sensory apparatus and recovering information about the world from them - they act as triggers for the recall of information from you memory about situations. This is a good demonstration of this:

I think the implications for taste, and what Tom Klark was trying to express, is that you only need enough 'flavour' to trigger memory of that flavour. I think also that accompanying flavours will have a greater impact on perceived strength than physical quantities of a flavour....

Gregory is better at explaining it. I've seen him at a few conferences - he's a lovely bloke...

this is interesting stuff, thanks.

the problem with that

is puffing unflavoured eliquid for a week

It would defo work .. however - in this case this experiment is probably ONLY good for home mixers ..

from a commercial perspective - you cannot force all your customers and prospective customers to go on a "cleanse" for a week

we are not gywneth paltrow

Its an interesting experiment for sure - commercially I would say unviable

I extended the post :)

and apparently you are up on homeopathic soup

aye, i get your point. i think it is something for the home brewers, although i wonder what the total percentage of concentrate is in the tom klark liquids that prompted @domejunky ’s experiment?

has anybody ever tried them, actually?

I think people forget how strong real tobacco is. I think most of us typically vape tobacco flavours much weaker in taste to the real thing. I think it was @Rickster who mentioned how strong FLV tobaccos were... and they are, I can taste them fine at 0.5% BUT if you wanted to make something like an authentic Cavendish pipe tobacco, with the strength of a real pipe, I think I'd be using a lot more.

Same for fags really, last time I had one it took me hours to get the taste out of my mouth, way stronger in taste than anything I've vaped lately.

I tried it and lasted about 7 puffs before I relented and whacked some concentrate in there. I like the idea of au naturel, but I can't seem to get on with the reality of it.

I've ordered some. In the interview I think he said his highest percentage was 1.6%
