I generally use an old toothbrush to gently brush the crud off the coil once it's been lightly glowed and turns to an ash.

I wouldn't imagine it'd be any different, the only thing to generally concern yourself with is releasing toxic agents from the coil material.

I'm not a materials expert so I don't know if there are dangers around other coil materials other than Titanium, but a policy of gently-gently would hold true for safety I feel.
