The Weird Link Between E-Cigarettes and Mental Health Disorders

Yeah, it's been a well known fact for years that there's a higher percentage of smoking prevalence in people who happen to suffer from mental health issues.. probably due to the stress such conditions can cause.

It's logical that it should follow that there's a higher percentage of vapers in the same groups these days as many of us are switching from smoking to vaping.

If there is a link, it's between those people with mental health issues that used to smoke and but now have switched to vaping.

Desperately reaching for reasons to justify heavy handed regulation, but this kind of concocted bullsheet doesn't cut the mustard I'm afraid.

As someone who suffers from depression *waves her Prozac in the air like she just don't care* I've actually found the opposite.
I used to punish myself for smoking, already feeling low and then feeling even more of a failure being a slave to something I knew was killing me, but because you're so low you kind of don't care if it kills you and carry on and so the viscous circle revolves.

I now enjoy vaping, I've converted a few smoking friends to vaping therefore getting them on the road to recovery and it has also meant I've found my way here to an incredibly welcoming and simply awesome community. Every single one of those things bring me nothing but feel-good highs.

The article and the findings weren't too unbalanced in my opinion. Shame about the headline!
Given that nicotine is a stimulant it is probably a substance that it is better for those with depressive tendencies to be addicted to rather than alcohol or the heavy use of THC, both of which are well known depressants.

I don't have a problem with the piece at all, use of the word "weird" aside.

It's just a leader for further coverage of some more research and I'm all for research being out and up for debate - and if it demonstrates that more people with mental health issues use ecigs then that is an interesting subject for study.

“People with mental health conditions have largely been forgotten in the war on smoking,” study author Sharon Cummins said in a university press release. “But because they are high consumers of cigarettes, they have the most to gain or lose from the e-cigarette phenomenon.”

As someone who has mental health issues I adopted vaping as a coping strategy rather than returning to smoking.

It would seem logical that those compelled to take up smoking in the face of all of the facts regarding its dangers must feature on one disorder spectrum or other.

I thought it was interesting that more smokers with mental health issues had tried ecigs than smokers who didn't admit to any issues. To me that suggests a greater willingness to change habits and lifestyle amongst those that have experienced depression.

Huh...

I read an article the other day saying it was GOOD for mental health issues

Yeah that's about what I think too.

the heavy use of THC, both of which are well known depressants.

THC is actually more of a stimulant than a depressant though it doesn't really fit neatly into either box. It has similar tendencies in that regard to nicotine, which acts as a stimulant but can also relax you and reduce stress. Things are very rarely black and white and it all gets very complicated quite quickly.

Having worked in mental health for nearly 30 years, currently with an organisation that bans service users from using ecigs on their property (including outside), this is a subject very close to my heart!
The last article I found on the subject of smoking rates within mh was that a whopping 96% of people with schizophrenia smoke.
People generally do self-medicate, often in very self-destructive ways (i.e. tobacco, illicit drugs, alcohol & excessive caffeine consumption), and I've seen many very early deaths directly attributed to this type of lifestyle.
Of course more people who use ecigs will experience a range of mh issues than amongst the general population, because a disproportionately high number of people in this group are/have been smokers.
