Threads of shame

I tinker with watches and use grease on back plates n seals...a little dab of silicon grease will do ya! ;)

Yep, it was when I was first getting into mechs and before I discovered Contralube...which now I've remembered, I need to dig it out for the threads on my copper mods.

What's the best way to clean threads? Some of the 510 connections on my atties have some black paint on them from screwing them into those cheapo stands from FT.

i use very fine grade scotch brite (abrassive pad) then through an ultra sonic wash, or just a good soapy wash and blow dry, can buy scotch brite anywhere online, also the dishwashing pads, with scotch brite on one side, would be ideal, just cut into small pieces and rub around threads.

just be aware all the threads i clean are uncoated, it may remove coating, but for an external thread i see no prob with that. the green scotch brite is best.

You say that, but many on here run high end brass or copper mecs...with brass or copper 510's or hybrids with no problems. You saying you have a Vamo...well I still have the original from when they first came out, they were supposed to have butter threads but mine is still perfect!

Over tightening any atty to any device will eventually FUBAR something, especially if the threads are all dirty and full of grit!

My work mods come plastering with me which means they operate in a Harsh environment

......sand and gypsum grit a plenty. It's mainly dropping the mods onto hard surfaces that strips the threads and some mods are clearly more resilient than others. Is it worth me taking a high end mod into that environment I'm not sure but from my own experience the brass thread mods fail far quicker than stainless. Ergo, they can be shite :)
