What's new

We need to keep an eye on this....

Would be nice if they could provide the names of the 25% of liquids that were deemed as free from DA and AP. This would provide us with a list of 'safe' liquids for our benefit, while retaining the

anonymity of the offending 75%!

Releasing any names, whether free of the substance or not, would only start a witch hunt. Which was not the idea of the tests in the first place.
With nobody knowing, who, what, when or where, the industry as a whole can act on the results.
The problem (so to speak) is with the flavours, and from what I understand is easily fixed. But they want the whole industry to be aware. Just because vendor X is clear now, a change of flavor supplier for what ever reason, might then make vendor X fall into the other 75%.

The Perfumers Apprentice has a write-up of Diacetyle that is worth a read.
https://shop.perfumersapprentice.com/t-FlavorWorkshopCustard.aspx
If you have a look at their flavors they also make a note of any that contain the two compounds named in the article - note that they do not contain Diacetyl directly but there is a suggestion that these two may break down and form trace amounts of Diacetyl, as an impurity.
If this is something to worry about then I hope that manufacturers can get together to look at alternatives, as it currently affects most custardy or dessery flavours :(
Also note that this is not unique to The Perfumers Apprentice, it applies to any company out there...

Tis a good thing these tests are being carried out,and obviously it is something we can avoid if high levels are found. However I will not put it at the top of my things to worry about list just yet.

Air pollution is responsible for 29,000 premature deaths a year in Britain - ten times the number of people killed in road accidents - according to a review by the Government's scientific advisory group, the Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants.

The more research the better as far as I'm concerned. This is one reason why we should not fear regulation - just stupid, badly thought out regulation.

In terms of harm reduction, yes, vaping is far better for us than burning tobacco (I have no clue what sub ohmers get up to) but we should pay close attention to findings like this, especially if alternative ingredients can avoid the diacetyl completely. From what I've read it is the butter, cream and custard flavourings which are the focus of the attention. It's not as simple as abandoning anything with custard in the description though - there could be "butter" or "cream" in your cappuccino, biscuit or banana milkshake flavoured juice. The diacetyl issue is familiar to food and beer manufacturers too, so it's not exclusively related to vaping.

Some manufacturers and sellers will be more vigilant about this than others. I get a lot of comfort when I read a website and see that they're at least aware and checking for this problem when sourcing their ingredients.

I liked what I read on Manabush's website, I liked even more what I discovered from FlavourArt in Italy and Feel Life BioScience in Shenzhen (NatureVape sell Feel Life products among others). Responsible manufacturers will be all over this, pro-actively.

Vaping is a consumer-led business - it's YOU who chooses what juices to buy and who to buy them from.

i'm really hoping capella vanilla custard is ok...
but something this good has to be bad
:-)

from Capella : Do any of your flavorings contain Diacetyl ?We do not use Diacetyl in ANY of our flavorings.
Even though Diacetyl is on the FDA approved GRAS list for flavoring manufacturers, there are other compounds available to mimic a buttery/creamy taste.

of course that doesn't mean it couldn't be in there caused by a reaction.

I do believe Capella custard DID contain them, however Capella started making it without and are fading out the old stock with it in. (Read somewhere here I believe)

Nevermind ZTs already cleared that up lol.

That might explain why with some liquids we find our breathe is taken away. Might start home brewing...
