I didnt know the variant in South Africa was different than the one in the UK.

Same here, it also implies that its likely that other mutations will appear, my first thought when the kent variant appeared was why has it not mutated before now, covids is over a year old already, such a coincidence it mutates as soon as a vaccine is released!

I hope so! I have tried not to follow it too much, not hiding my head in the sand, i was just getting frustated with the contradictions and inconsistencies that we were being given by the experts, had to have a browse today as my kids are having six week xmas holidays and I'm back without a job....again lol
