I've got a few small packs of the wicking material in sheets, I'm fairly confident with cotton bacon now but what do I do with the other stuff? Cut into strips and fluff up the insides?

I peal off the top thicker layer, tear off the width I need fluffy it a little roll and wick with Muji pads. Scottish Roll method works really well with Muji.

+1 with the Muji

I peel the top and bottom layer off and carefully stretch out the fibres. Then trim the edges and finally cut a strip off. The width will depend on your coil. Then roll it.
Check out youtube for the Scottish Roll technique.

Edit... :assassin: Ninja'd again. (must learn to type faster :D )

Aye, I'll 3rd the jockanese roll and muji/cotton pads.

Been using up the last of the organic cotton I got out of the local hippy food shop recently, treat it mostly like muji and it's not too bad.

OK in drippers but in a rta wouldn't the roll method compact it too much to wick liquid properly?

+2 with Muji, I bought so much of it I'm committed. I use the Scottish roll in RDAs, and I use what I'm calling "The soft southern roll" in RTAs - basically a touch less cotton, rolled softer so less tension when you insert it into the coil

My word that's a lot of cotton to jam through that coil! Is that normal. I don't normally use anywhere near that much in my tanks or drippers.

Always use enough to create a bit tension so that the cotton fits snugly in the coil without having to force it in. The thing with the Scottish Roll technique is that when you spread the cotton and roll, you're introducing more space between the fibres. There always looks like there's more cotton than there actually is, which is a good thing. Think of your cotton as a sponge... if there's no tension in the coil it won't retain your juice and if it's too tight no juice can get in. A good Scottish Roll on an RDA with the wick just touching the juice well will suck like a straw. Don't pack your deck with cotton - your juice will cling to it for dear life and gravity will do you no favours.
