What's new

Bezs Liquid.

I just watched a video of some guy showing how to eat the fruit in the hope he'd describe the flavour but he didn't.
He did say something interesting though which was the kernel/stone in it contains a nut inside which is edible too.
He also said it contains 4x vit c than an orange.

Looking at the way they make the drink there appears to be nothing else in it except they add sweetened cream to the fruit after it's fermented in oak casks for 24 months.

I have little mixing experience, but hoped these descriptions of the Amarula drink might help? Long time since I tried it ...........

Hailing from South Africa, outside of Phalaborwa, Amarula Fruit Cream is made from the marula fruit, found only in the sub-Saharan African plains. The fruit is fermented, and then double-distilled and aged in oak barrels for 24 months. It's then mixed with fresh cream and bottled at 17 percent ABV. Perhaps the most widely known cream liqueur on this list, Amarula offers a nutty profile, with floral and fruit notes.
And:

Made in South Africa from the fruit of the marula tree, this liqueur is surprisingly soft on the palate, mixing subtle fruit and vanilla tones. Best of all, a portion of proceeds benefit elephant habitat conservation efforts throughout Africa. Enjoy it over ice or, if you’re feeling like you truly deserve a treat, over ice cream.

And:

This South African liqueur is made in part from the fruit of African Marula trees, known to be a favorite treat of local elephants; this fruit is crushed, fermented, then distilled and barrel-aged before it’s blended with cream. Barrel-aging contributes flavors of warm toast and vanilla, and the resulting liqueur reminds us of a thin, creamy dulce de leche. It’s sweet, but complex, and awfully nice in cocktails.

Amarula is a better version of Baileys, much better, with extra coffee and chocolate, I don't recall the citrus, but I wasn't looking for it.

There are multiple uses for marula fruit. You can boil the marula skin to brew tea with, or burn it and grind it as a substitute for coffee. Are you wondering what marula fruit tastes like? Well, marula tastes almost tart, with a sweet or sour taste depending on its ripeness.

So Bezs idea was a liquid based on a South African drink called Amarula.

Now I've never tried it (Never even heard of it to be fair! I'll try and find a bottle somewhere) but Bez described it as cream based liquor with a Rum note and a cocoa/coffee flavour. He was stuck though as it contains Marula fruit and he was struggling to replicate it.

Now this sounds like quite a complex recipe! I sent him some Irish Cream TFA but I'm not sure if he ended up using it or not.

So... What do we reckon? I have some experience with Rum flavourings and as a rule, the ones you can buy off the shelf are abit crap!

I know @StrawberryRipple is abit of a wizz with cream bases.

Throw some ideas out their everyone, I've got a couple like using Bourbon TFA as a sub for the Rum, Fresh Cream FA, Irish Cream TFA. I'd avoid any sweetener as the Marula fruit which will need to research is apparently quite Tart and the Irish Cream TFA is alittle sweet already.

Let's see what we can do.

amarula is nice dude - you should try it

Order is in, let's see where we start.

Think Mrs Chris K have something to say about that! :18:

Looking forward to trying it, sounds like it might be up my street, gives an idea aswell as where to take the liquid.

Her indoors is a huge Baileys fan and has tried it and said its nice but sickly sweet.

I'm still a bit confused, even reading the thread (and having no idea what anything mentioned tastes like) but I'm reading 'Rum' and some kind of oak distilled fruit?

... what about

FLV - Rum Raisin

with some of that FLV cream everyone keeps saying is great?

.. maybe a tiny amount of WF hazelnut for a creamy nutty background?

... as a start? or is that totally off the track?

Nobody knows!
I get the impression the fruit it like a cross between a plum and a mango but some say the fruit in is is very subtle and barely noticeable.
Who knows.
I thought about trying to source some of the fruit but decided I'd rather not encourage deprivation for the elephants.....

It's posh Baileys, or baileys with a more robust flavour. I had more than a few pm's with Bez talking about Baileys, because the day I got my lifetime ban from my local spoons (March 20th 2020) was the day (apart from whatever else I'd drunk and been spiked with) I bought a litre bottle of baileys, cracked it open in the spoons smoking area, which is an instant ban, and had the remainder of the bottle seized by the police. Bez loved all that chat, I can assure you :18:

Nope, it's a good start, I've got the flv and I like fw hazelnut, I think amarula, from memory has more coffee and maybe some choc, not sure about the strange fruit, rum seems about right for the spirit, Black Kraken rum perhaps.

Edit: FA Irish Cream as well, maybe some cranberry, I have this thing about adding cranberries.
