I just watched a video of some guy showing how to eat the fruit in the hope he'd describe the flavour but he didn't.
He did say something interesting though which was the kernel/stone in it contains a nut inside which is edible too.
He also said it contains 4x vit c than an orange.
Looking at the way they make the drink there appears to be nothing else in it except they add sweetened cream to the fruit after it's fermented in oak casks for 24 months.
I have little mixing experience, but hoped these descriptions of the Amarula drink might help? Long time since I tried it ...........
Hailing from South Africa, outside of Phalaborwa, Amarula Fruit Cream is made from the marula fruit, found only in the sub-Saharan African plains. The fruit is fermented, and then double-distilled and aged in oak barrels for 24 months. It's then mixed with fresh cream and bottled at 17 percent ABV. Perhaps the most widely known cream liqueur on this list, Amarula offers a nutty profile, with floral and fruit notes.
And:
Made in South Africa from the fruit of the marula tree, this liqueur is surprisingly soft on the palate, mixing subtle fruit and vanilla tones. Best of all, a portion of proceeds benefit elephant habitat conservation efforts throughout Africa. Enjoy it over ice or, if you’re feeling like you truly deserve a treat, over ice cream.
And:
This South African liqueur is made in part from the fruit of African Marula trees, known to be a favorite treat of local elephants; this fruit is crushed, fermented, then distilled and barrel-aged before it’s blended with cream. Barrel-aging contributes flavors of warm toast and vanilla, and the resulting liqueur reminds us of a thin, creamy dulce de leche. It’s sweet, but complex, and awfully nice in cocktails.
