His short time in Metallica served him well. James clearly taught him how to write. Nowhere near as well, but he tries bless him.

Metallica? True to their roots? Shoulda stayed in their little shoe box? Nope! Their growth and artistry is part of what seperates them. Like a guy who's not afraid to wear pink trousers. Secure enough not to care what might have been expected of them.
