Diacetyl in Liquids makes BBC news

As a relativly new vaper i am guessing that there isnt a list available yet of "safe" to use liquid for either premade or concentrate?

A lot of sites you visit for concentrates and liquid will have a disclaimer about diacetyl, some will mention diacetyl content in the individual juice and concentrate discriptions. If you are worried about it, use the contact form to ask about it. If they don't reply or waffle on at you don't buy from them. However you will find that the high quality vendors are vapers themselves, and they are as worried about what they are putting into their lungs as you are about what you are putting in yours.

Diacetyl should not be found in any liquid for vaping and this is what happens when fucknuts think they can earn a quick profit by punting any old crap out to vapers.

If people can't regulate themselves then in cases like this I find the proposition of regulation a good one.

I would most definitely agree.

this *really* winds me up. Diacetyl has NO place in e-liquid. It's one of the few flavours we know for certain is bad to inhale.

We work really hard to make sure that none of the flavours we use contain the stuff. That being said since Dr Farsalinos latest research we are going to be getting all of of our flavours independently GC-MS testing this autumn so that we know 100% for sure that nothing we use contains it. We are presently taking the word of companies like Capella and what's on their MSDS sheets at face value.

for example though our custard flavour has about a dozen flavours in it, and a GC-MS test will cost £100ish so that one liquid will set us back £1200+ in testing, which is why we haven't had that done yet. (we only have so much cashflow)

There should be regulation of e-liquid manufacture. As long as the tests etc that they require are within the reach of the average small business then it's good for everyone.

What would help is if there was a juice manufacturers trade body with a voluntary code of practise. Juices not bearing the body's logo would be instantly identifiable and it would be possible to check a liquid was listed with them.

This story should not be happening, the fact that it is ought to spur us as a community into a proactive response.

If there was a juice makers trade body that didn't cost silly money a month in subs (ECITA is out of reach for companies like mine) I'd join it tomorrow. Problem is for me, that I haven't got anything like the time to set one up.

Ideally it would have:

  • centralised database of GC-MS results for off the shelf flavours so we know exactly what is in them
  • random testing of some of each member companies e-liquid every few months
  • a shiny badge to put on your website/labels to say that you meet these standards
  • advice and stuff on bottles, labels, manufacturing processes etc etc

Well said!

I think it's pretty much proved that inhaling diacetyl causes popcorn workers' lung because workers involved in the production of butter popcorn where the flavour comes from diacetyl get it. It's also linked with microwaved butter popcorn: Open the packet after microwaving and take a sniff and you're inhaling diacetyl.

I think for now since there is no regulation avoid e-liquid which has a buttery taste and that includes custard flavours. That probably means fruit and tobacco flavours but not exclusively: Hang Sen Berry Family has a distinct buttery taste.

It's in the industry's own interests to have independent tests on all their e-liquid and publish the findings. If they don't do that then they are promoting official regulation. But I don't really know why regulation is opposed. Personally, I would rather know that a liquid is safe to vape rather than take a chance.

Lastly as Dr Farsolinos found, some e-liquid manufacturers in the U.S. were claiming their e-liquid was free of diacetyl when in fact it contained diacetyl. As it turned out they didn't test their e-liquid so they didn't know what was in it mainly because they were buying concentrates from third-parties.

Looking on the bright side if we get popcorn lung we can always sue the b'tards and make a bit of money before we die.

Most websites I have seen post "diacteyl free" if applicable. I wish they would all be so aware and create alternatives.
At least in the USa posting Liquid Diacteyl free don't mean crap unless its tested in an independent lab. Maybe their supplier said it was Diacteyl free and its not. About a year ago the big flavor concentrate suppliers stated replacing diacteyl with 2 other compounds that when combined and vaper produce-wait-diacteyl!
AEMSA | American E-Liquid Manufacturing Standards Association AEMSA is a E -Liquid Manufacturers Trade Organization that sets Manufacturing Standard that member must comply to. 1 of the standard is not using any of those compounds and have independent Lab Tests confirming.
