I don’t understand the rationale behind fanning it. There are only two small holes, so what is the benefit of fanning the wick wider than the liquid holes?
I try not to fluff it at all, put the wick through the coil, stick the chimney on, cut it flush then just tuck the ends in so a little bit protrudes through the holes. Just a strip of cotton connecting the two holes with the coil in the centre. It seems to work perfectly.
Maybe you should try a mesh wick with cotton inside, just to keep it interesting [emoji12][emoji16]
On a serious note; I believe the fanning out makes the wick resemble a feather and it helps to absorb more than a dense cotton cable. I might be wrong (I am a little lightheaded from a 12h workday).
